I have a lot of wonderful memories of riding the bus with the Wrights growing up. No doubt some of the toughest kids I've ever known. They got stitches without anesthetic. Most of the time, they were rugged and took injuries in stride. Well, there was time Matt put a pitchfork into his foot, and got a fancy bandage for that one!
My favorite "Tater" memory goes back to when I was in 2nd grade and Tater was in 3rd at St. Pat's. Jennifer had just started 1st grade at St. Pat's. We were on the playground, the boys on one side playing touch football, girls on the other jumping rope and visiting. It was the beginning of the year, and everyone was excited to be back and playing at recess, except Tater. He was unusually standing off to the end of the parking lot (our playground). I walked over and he turned away from me when I called his name. I got him to turn around and tears rolling down his face. Clearly, he didn't want to show he was crying in front of his buddies. After all, boys don't cry, at least ones in the 1970s didn't. I asked what was wrong, he said he was worried that his little sister wouldn't have any friends and he didn't want her to feel left out. I told him to look across the parking lot because Jennifer was already in line to jump rope, no sweat! He relaxed. That told me a lot about the kind of "big brother" he was. I don't know if a lot of people got to see the kind, gentle side of this really tough kid, but that day, I did.
Ps. My least favorite memory was when he got mad at me, curled up his fist and yelled, "Carla, I've had about enough of this, so quit calling me Tater!" That was when he was 10. Old habits, my friend...
My condolences to Hank, Jeanine, Matt, Pat, John, Jen, and Derek and your families.
RIP Douglas E. "Tater" Wright
