Obituary of Henry W. Schmidt, Jr.

Attorney Henry W. Schmidt, Jr. passed away May 7th, 2024.  Born in Lockport, New York on February 24,1946, he was the proud grandson of Charles A. Upson and son of Henry W. and Jeanne (Upson) Schmidt, Sr.  

Henry worked as a private practice attorney for over 40 years, spending the last 30 years practicing from his office on West Main Street, in a building built by his grandfather for his great-grandfather's coal company, and one that he lovingly restored. He served as an assistant district attorney for Niagara County for many years, and was a member of the Army National Guard.  Over the years he has dutifully served as a board member of the Lockport Historical Society, Cornerstone Arena, and as a member of the Niagara and Erie County Bar Associations. 

He was known for his practical jokes, a quick turn of phrase, and his love for his family.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia (VanHorn) Schmidt; children Virginia (Cory) Barry, Victoria (James) Gleason, Vanessa (Matthew Deys) Schmidt, and Henry W. (Rebecca) Schmidt, III; grandchildren Alexander and Adelyn, Jackson and Emerson, and Wyatt and Violet; sister Suzanne (late David) Gartner; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call Friday, May 10th from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport, New York, 14094.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11th at 10:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 Church St., Lockport, New York.  Interment will be at Cold Springs Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers please make donations in his name to the Lockport Historical Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Association.  Visit pruddenandkandt.com.
