I am so sorry to hear of Kathleen's passing. I knew her in the late 1990s in San Francisco, where we worked together in HIV research. For this project, we traveled all over the Bay Area interviewing people with HIV and their partners about their lives and their health. In addition to enjoying Kathleen's spark and humor, I also learned a great deal from her as a researcher and anthropologist. She was a wry, kind woman who cared greatly about people and injustice. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Kathleen was a close friend of my sister Eliza back at Emmet Belknap -Eliza moved away after 8th grade. At 17, I was obviously far too worldly and mature to give any of her friends much mind, and when I did it was typically of the big-sisterly condescending sort. Cue ahead a few decades and I am living in DC, where Eliza would occasionally come to visit her family. About 10 years ago she re-connected there with Kathleen and then met me for lunch. I will never forget; when she said Kathleen Quirk my mind's eye saw, as if it was yesterday, the beautiful and captivating wide smile, the impish eyes and the sunny yet wicked smart disposition. We were both overwhelmed and deeply humbled as my sister told me about her compromised physical state; but that paled in comparison to the lesson in courage, optimism, determination and refusal to consider herself a victim - never. She was and will always be Kathleen Quirk, the beautiful generous soul with the sparkle in her eyes and the fire in her belly.
May her loved ones all live in the peace and joy she would wish for you.

Dear Quirk Family:
I had the good luck to meet Kathleen at American University while we were both searching for housing. I had found it hard to meet people at AU but Kathleen was instantly warm and friendly and I was quick to latch on to her. I ended up living with Kathleen and Jackie in Bethesda and we had some good times in our little house. Kathleen was such an audacious person - quick with a smart quip, which was always followed by her big, awesome laugh. I feel grateful to have known her. She was so loved and impacted the world so positively. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I am honoured to have met Kathleen on a number of occasions over the course of many years and shared with her the role of Godmother for a beloved friend’s daughter. Her strength of character always shone fiercely and she was so funny and stubborn and strong. I know she is finally at peace, and will miss her. I send love and prayers for Kathleen and her family.

Dear Quirk Family,
I am so sorry for your incredible loss. Kathleen was an amazing person with a huge heart, a quick wit, a great laugh, a brilliant mind, a strong moral compass and an appreciation for mild shenanigans!
We met at Oswego (hence the shenanigans) and connected quickly. She spoke often of her family and shared many funny stories; including how she and Jackie actually had their own language when they were little! (leave it to Kate to create a language!!!).
She came to visit me one college summer and instantly won over my toughest critics, my parents- they were so impressed with her.. ("What a class act" or "Now SHE was raised well!") and they were right!
Kate was a special gem and my "Piscean Soul Sister" and I just wanted to send my deepest sympathy to all of you.

I am a better person because I have known Kathleen Quirk. On Sunday mornings we would share a few hours of laughs, sometimes cries and an over abundance lifes reality. Kathleen and I both knew that every Sunday morning a little more of her body was taken by MS.. That did not stop the Jane Fonda workouts, the precision that was used in picking out the days' outfit ,or the insistence on applying the blue mascara. Kathleen liked to have a glass of red wine with her morning meds and some Sundays I snuck it by Anne. She taught me that coffee could never be too strong and that she did not like the yolks of her egg runny, but she did like hot peppers on them ... I joked that that was the Italian in her. She cursed profusely at political television that she did not agree with and she hated the show keeping up with the Kardashian's. We broke something almost every single Sunday morning that Kevin had to fix and Prince always ate the food we dropped on the floor from breakfast, I know she dropped some
on purpose. Kathleen was a warrior. Kathleen was self defined. She was a princess and an intellectual. I will miss her very much. Rest in Peace Kathleen.

To the extended Quirk family...
"KQ" as she was known to so many of us in LSHS, I am proud to say, was a friend of mine. And while I have not seen her since we graduated in 1984, I remember her as if we graduated yesterday in the Kenan Center. I remember her with clarity and with fondness. She was a beautiful gal by every measure. KQ was someone you would never forget. In everything she touched, she was spirited and engaged with every ounce of energy she could muster. Track, cheer leading...and even "math" (my fav) - she was a force of positive energy, drive and affection. On the day she left us for eternal life, I wrote this note on the LSHS Class of 1984 Facebook page. I thought you might like it.
------------------------
She was a cheerleader.
She was a runner.
She was a friend.
She was someone who pushed me.
She was someone who was effervescent.
She was someone who was in everyone's life in some capacity.
She was so much more.
I am sure we all have a special memory of KQ.
Caring, driven, loving, sharp and edgy!
That's how I remember KQ.
Though I haven't seen you since 1984, I remember you like yesterday.
May God bless your soul for all eternity.
We will all miss you so very much
---------------------------
Warmly and with deepest condolences.
Dip Khurana - LSHS Class of 1984.

Dear Quirk Family,
It is with my deepest sympathy that I write this note. Since the day I met Kathleen, her smile was never forgotten. It was always a joy to care for her. Her beauty, her humility and her engaging eyes defined her. So sorry that this shining star's life was cut short with MS. But she lived long enough to make a difference in so many lives. A golden soul.
I will pray for her many loved ones who took joy in loving and caring for her.
She will live in your hearts forever.
Stay well, Pat Weigel
