Obituary of Barry K. Berlin

Dr. Barry Berlin, PhD passed away October 23, 2017. Born February 1, 1941 in Yonkers, NY he was the son of William and Rose (Goldman) Berlin. Dr. Berlin has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, a Master's from Syracuse University (in mass communication from the Newhouse School) and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York (in mass communication), at Buffalo. Barry Berlin, PhD specializes in the journalism and media writing areas. His sub-specialties include media law and ethics, digital media and the Canadian media. A faculty member of Canisius College since 1976, Dr. Berlin served three, three-year terms as chair, from '95-'04. He is the founder and director of the Digital Media Arts program. Prior to joining the Canisius faculty, Dr. Berlin was a print journalist for 10 years--five as a reporter and five as an editor--in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York State. He grew up in Yonkers, N.Y., and Greene County, N.Y.
Involved in computer technology for teaching purposes since the advent of the Apple IIe's, Dr. Berlin has been instrumental in developing computer labs for the department, courses that use computers (e.g., in media writing, the Internet in authoring web sites and in the new digital media arts degree). He also has been involved in a number of grants, including four involving computers and two in matters Canadian. Dr. Berlin has co-authored numerous articles and books.
Dr. Berlin enjoyed reading on Thomas Jefferson, farming, his animals two cats, "VF" and "Buddy", his horse Ruby whom he kept at Mangold Stables. He loved wild life feeding all the animals around his house from the squirrels to wild turkeys. Dr. Berlin will be sadly missed by all.
Dr. Berlin is survived by his wife, Linda "Kinsey" (White) Berlin; dear friends Frank Wasik & Family and Richard Bergstrom & Family; also several friends, nieces, and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call Saturday, Oct. 28th from 1-2 PM with services following at 2 PM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. Interment will be in White Chapel Memorial Park. Memorial donations to the Niagara County SPCA would be appreciated. Visit pruddenandkandt.com.
