Obituary of Giuseppe Caridi
Please share a memory of Giuseppe to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
A man who embraced the American Dream; Giuseppe (Joe) Caridi, passed away on Tuesday March 21, 2017 in the Briody Health Care facility after a brief stay. His passing occurred just 6 weeks after the loss of his beloved wife of 59 years. Born on May 13, 1924 in Gallico Marina, Italy he was the son of Giuseppe and Antoinette (Falcone) Caridi.
As one of ten children, he began his work career as a child during the depression. His family launched a citrus processing business that supplied fruit and vegetables throughout his homeland and bordering countries. Joe's role took him to the major open-air markets throughout Italy and abroad.
At the age of 32, while making his first visit to this country, he met his future wife Mary. He decided to immigrate to the United States and begin a new career in the grocery business. In 1958, without speaking a word of English, he and Mary began a 52-year career as proprietors of Joe's Locust Market in Lockport.
He took great pride in becoming a United States citizen and embraced the opportunities and freedoms this nation provides.
Joe delighted in the friendships and relationships he developed with his customers. He took great pride in preparing his trademark pizza and subs. His colorful and outgoing personality was his trademark. He knew no strangers.
Joe was the beloved husband of Mary (D'Agostino) Caridi who preceded him in death on February 7, 2017; loving father of Joseph (Janelle) Caridi of North Tonawanda, Annette (Mark) Licata of Rochester, Anthony (Joan) Caridi of West Virginia; grandfather of Samuel and Olivia Caridi of North Tonawanda, Nicholas Licata of New York City, Christopher Licata of Rochester, Michael (Morgan) Caridi of North Carolina, Andrew and Matthew Caridi of West Virginia. Also surviving are a sister in Italy (Nancy); and several nieces and nephews.
