Uncle Dave was my father's older brother and a strong presence in his and our lives. I always felt my Dad, Bob, really looked up to Dave and was a better person when he was around. You always knew Dave was in the room as he had a commanding presence. For most of my young years he was the strong male of our overall family.
My favorite stories are the ones about the Navy where we was told he had the toughest beard than anyone the barber have shaved. And this is a guy who, during WWII, saw A LOT of beards!
Dave is of what alot of people call the greatest generation and I'm beginning to believe it. They protected the free world and ushered in so many technological advancements. In those advancements they took the most care of how top use these new tools. Where as today, the tech world runs out of control, not very careful about how things play out and more interested in money. Dave was very much of the mind that we be cautious in life so all can benefit from man's ingenuity and not abuse it.
We were able to see Uncle Dave only a few times in the last number of years as he was facing challenges of old age. He was certainly slower but still with the same strong willed mindset he's always had.
He will be missed, yet his presence in our memories will always be there.
