Obituary of Edward Chrzanowski

Edward S. Chrzanowski passed away suddenly May 4, 2010 in Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport. Ed was born in Philadelphia in 1929 of immigrant parents in a predominantly Polish neighborhood in the Northeast section of Philadelphia called Port Richmond, an old, densely populated area. He attended Polish elementary school and Northeast Catholic High School, staffed by the Oblates of St. Francis DeSales who formerly staffed DeSales High School here in Lockport. Ed entered the seminary in 1947, was ordained a priest in 1957, received a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and a Masters Degree in English at the Catholic University in Washington, DC , and later received a Masters Degree in Theology from Notre Dame University. He left the priesthood in 1977, married in 1980 to Shirley (Mahar) Chrzanowski of Lockport. Ed wrote for the Niagara Gazette and the Buffalo News for several years, taught at several high schools and colleges in the area, and worked as a college counselor and taught English and Philosophy at Attica Correctional Facility for several years until he was fired for bringing in cigarettes for an emotionally disturbed student. He wrote resumes and worked at Business First as a legal researcher up until two years ago when he suffered a mild stroke that prevented him from typing. Ed published his first book &amp;quot;The Dead End Kids of Port Richmond Philadelphia: A Memoir&amp;quot; in 2002 and he published &amp;quot;Letters From a Lifer&amp;quot; with the help of his wife in 2008. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, volunteered with Meals-On-Wheels and enjoyed reading and bolwing. Besides his wife Shirley, Ed is the brother-in-law of Edward (Lois) Mahar, Mary Gephart, Sally Mahar all of Lockport, Ann Chrzanowski of New Jersey and the late John Mahar; uncle of Walter, Michael (Bonnie) Frank, Lucy, Joseph (Nina) Chrzanowski, Rose Irwin, Charles (Bernadette), Kathleen, Michael (Jill), Ginessa Mahar, Theresa (John) Dolan and Sally Gephart; brother of the late Joseph, Stanley and Walter Chrzanowski. Relatives and friends may call Friday 3-8 PM in Prudden &amp; Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport where prayers will be offered Saturday at 10 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Memorials the St. Francis DeSales Mission, Attn: Fr. Joseph Dumphrey, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport, NY 14094 or to the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, SSMN, St. Mary's Center, 241 LaFayette Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14213 would be appreciated by the family.
