Greetings from Washington state ~ I'm the older daughter of Sid Barshter, who, along with Ray Mednick, owned Lerch & Daly for many years. My dad used to bring Charlie home for dinner when he was still a kid sweeping floors downstairs in the stock room. Our family watched him grow up and become the sweet, likable and caring guy he was. We are terribly saddened to hear of his passing. On behalf of my parents, Sid & Evie Barshter, and my sister, Nancy, I send our heartfelt condolences to Charlie's family and all in Lockport who knew and loved him.

To the Gray Family, I will always remember Charlie as someone who was kind, considerate, and thought of others. When I needed a new suit for my first job, Charlie allowed me to use store credit. I never forgot him and purchased all my work clothes from him. It is with deep saddness that I heard about his passing. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Rich Garlock and Family.

To The Family, I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I also want to share the comfort of John 5:28 ,29 where we are promised that those who have fallen asleep in death have the hope of receiving a "resurrection" back to life. Life on an earth restored to a beautiful paradise. Psalms 37:11 says, "The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." While we await that wonderful time please find comfort in these promises.

We are both saddened by the news of the loss of a caring, gentle and loving man. The City of Lockport was a better place when the Grey family arrived from Scotland. Charlie contributed so much to the city and to so many people. We are in Florida and will not have the opportunity to pay our condolences in person. Only the good die young, heaven will have a new star.

Our thoughts are with you all. The men in our family would not have been the same without Charlie's expert care. He always made us feel so special, never forgetting a size and picking the best ties ever. We will miss this special Lockport Man.

I was saddened to hear of Charlie’s passing. He was always such a fun loving guy that I always knew I could trust with any suit he picked out for me. I have not seen him in years but as they say memories are the legacy of love. I will miss him.

A letter From Brian Arnold, at age 9 Dear Uncle Charlie: Thank you for all of the happy memories . You were my favorite baby sitter. Thanks for letting me stay up those extra 15 to 30 minutes. Thanks for your kind and gentle demeanor, even when I was rambunctious or wild. Thanks for never getting mad. And -- oh, Thanks for not telling Mom and Dad when I didn’t behave. I remember all of the fun things you did with us, such as, playing tetherball in the back yard, kickball, baseball, catch, kick the can, red light green light, hide in go seek. I remember you hiding behind the skinny little sapling in the back yard, in plain sight and we ran right past you. That was so funny! Thanks for always playing games with me when I asked -- I admit, I was often a sore loser (Chris will say I was “always”a sore loser) -- but you always let me win! During football season, I couldn’t wait to get out of school and see you at football practice. You were the team Manager for the Lockport Lions and you let me play with all of the equipment. You and Eddie Byrd used to play football with me and my friends. That was a blast. You were always at my birthday parties and other important events, which was important to me. You always had a fun gift or funny card for birthdays or Christmas. I remember the birthday card you gave me that said on the front “An Egyptian sold me this card for ten dollars”. It had a funny cartoon of an Egyptian on the front and he was saying “Ten Dolla”. Inside the card said “Do you think ‘Egypt’ me?” I think there was $10.00 inside. I saved that card – it is surely packed away in my scrap book in the attic. Most of all -- thanks for being a great Uncle. What more could a kid ask for? Love, Brian ________________________________________________________________________ A letter from Brian Arnold, at age 18 Dear Uncle Charlie: Thank you for all of the happy memories. Remember the fun times at the lake -- such as our row boat races? I smile when I think of it. Thanks for keeping me looking good and nicely clothed for the school dances, prom and numerous special events. I was the best dressed dude in Lockport. I always enjoyed seeing you at Lerch & Daley’s. Thanks again for being at all of my special events -- I hope you know how much I appreciated that. Thanks for all of the birthday and Christmas gifts. I always knew I would receive something nice to wear from you. You were always so generous. Thanks for all of the good times such as hauling us all to Reid’s all the time in your car for burgers and shakes, and teaching me to drive out on the back roads. I remember down at the lake, you let me move your car and I nailed the trash can and it went flying.........thanks for not getting mad. I am an uncle too and I want to express my sincere appreciation and thanks for setting such a good example; however, I could never match you in that regard. Thanks for being a great uncle. Love, Brian __________________________________________________________________________ A letter from Brian Arnold – today, February 10, 2009 Dear Charles: Thank you for all of the happy memories. I had just graduated from college and I remember coming to your store with the exciting (or scary) news that I was moving to Houston, Texas, for a new job. I remember someone there asking me why I would want to move to such a miserable place – "you could cut the air with a knife and the bugs were huge", he said. You simply smiled and softly congratulated me and wished me the best of luck. You told me I could do anything I set my mind to. I’ll never forget that. Hey – thanks for supplying the cool tuxes for my wedding. Again, I was the best dressed dude in Lockport. As a gift, you did not charge me for mine – you picked up the tab – just another testament of your kindness and generosity. Kelly, and the kids, remember you as the “fun” uncle who was dancing at the wedding with all of the kids. Again, a testament of the fun memories you had the tendency to create. We have grown and gone our own ways, but I will never forget you. I want to take this time to thank you again for all of the kind things that you have done for me and others. Thank you for being a part of my life. I believe that this is not the only place that we walk, live and spend our time. God has called you for another task in another place.......a better place. You will continue to spread your love and to be loved. I hope you have found peace and ..........I will see you again. With much love, Your nephew, Brian and my family -- Kelly, Kyle, Michael, Alex and Robbie XXOO

Some of my most vivid memories of being young is running around Lerch and Dalys under Uncle Chucks watchful eye. He is one of the kindest, gentlest, and caring men I have known and will ever know. He is, and forever will be, sorley missed.

I started working for Charlie when I was a sophomore in high school, continued to work for him through college during my breaks, and then for a short time after I graduated. However, I never felt that I worked FOR Charlie so much as worked WITH him. To be completely honest it rarely ever felt like actual work. In fact working at Lerch and Daly was too much fun to ever be called work. As an employer, Charlie created and nurtured an environment of fun and family at the store. In doing so he set a standard for workplace fun that no company I have been with since has been able to imitate. But Charlie was so much more than a generous employer and patient mentor; he was a great friend. Despite the 29 years gap (to the day) between our ages he never spoke to me as if I was a child, but always with the respect of an equal and with the familiarity of a lifelong friend. Charlie genuinely treated his employees as friends. That being said, everyone he treated as a friend he also treated as family. And this is why I feel that with his passing I have lost family. So, to all of Charlie's family and especially his daughters, grandchildren, sisters, nieces, and nephews- I offer my deepest condolences. His passing is a great loss and he is sorely missed. Please take heart that the memory of his generosity, patience, warmth, and laughter will live on through the great many lives he has touched during his lifetime.
