Lizbeth M. Helwig passed away June 3, 2014 in Briody Health Care Facility. Born in Lockport on July 10, 1923 she was the daughter of S. Merritt and Bessie (Whitmore) Van Wagoner. Lizbeth worked for NYNEX for over 20 years where she was an operator retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Gasport Senior Citizens Center, the Telephone Pioneers, and Keenagers. Lizbeth enjoyed knitting and embroidery. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond A. Helwig in April 2002 and her son John Helwig in 1977. Lizbeth is survived by her four daughters Margaret (Douglas) Day of Texas, Kathleen (Thomas) Boyd of Wilson, Susan (James) Vanderlinde of Wisconsin, and Cynthia (Richard) Albee of Gasport; grandmother of fourteen, twenty-five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; sister of the late S. Merritt Van Wagoner, Jr., Katherine Gearhart, Lucretia Sahrow, and Peggy Cheasty; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Friday, June 6th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7th at 11 AM in Wrights Corners Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will be in Cold Springs Cemetery.
