Obituary of Mary Joustra
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Alice Teresa Joustra was born at home in Lockport, NY, on January 5, 1919, surrounded by family, and passed away amidst a circle of family and friends on May 4, 2013. A resident of Nashville, TN for the past ten years, she was a member of the parish of St. Henry's Catholic Church of the same city. The youngest of ten children born to Anna Elizabeth and Henry Patrick Murphy, Mary Alice was educated first at St. Patrick's parochial school. Always independent in nature, she chose not to follow her sisters to the girls' Catholic Academy and then to Manhattanville, which was then a Catholic Women's College outside New York City, but opted instead to attend Lockport High School and then Alfred University, a coed college in upstate New York. There she majored in business. Tall, slender, and athletic, she played tennis and softball and modeled during her college years. She married James George Joustra, an independent Lockport businessman who became her husband and partner for 49 years, until his death in 2002. Together they raised two children, Jana Davis (husband Ansel) of Nashville, TN, and James Jr. (wife Sharon) of Orlando, FL. They shared a love of horses, dogs, tennis and golf, and were active members of many organizations, including St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic
Church, the Lockport Town and Country Club (LTCC), The Park Country Club of Buffalo, and
Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, NC. They lived in Lockport and wintered in Pinehurst for many years. Mary Alice twice was the 18-hole Women's Golf Champion for LTCC.
In addition to her children, Mary Alice leaves behind an extended family that includes two grandchildren, Andrew James Joustra of Los Angeles, CA, and Skylar Alice Virginia Davis of
Nashville, TN; two step-children, Carol Kinzly and George Joustra, both of Lockport; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, and many loving friends. Her life was centered around her family, and it remained so until the end.
