Obituary of Elvira Monkelbaan
Please share a memory of Elvira to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Elvira G Monkelbaan passed away April 28, 2013 in DeGraff Memorial Hospital at the age of 93. She was the only child of Leroy and Irene Holland.
As a graduate of North Tonawanda High School, Vi worked at Wurlizers during the war and in 1945 married Joseph R Monkelbaan. After starting a family while living on Sweeney Street in North Tonawanda, she and Joe moved to a farm in Pendleton to raise their 5 children. A busy homemaker, Vi was often a room mother in her children's classrooms and became a charter member of the Starpoint Central School's PTA.
Once her family was grown, Vi became an active member of the Pendleton Historical Society and Pendleton and Wendelville Senior Citizens groups. An avid bowler until her mid 80's, Vi was a member of the Buffalo and Tonawanda Bowling associations and the WIBC.
A devout Catholic, Vi was a long time member of the Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. A love of music that began as a member of her high school choir led her to sing in church choirs and remained a source of enjoyment throughout her life.
Predeceased by her husband Joseph R. and two sons, Joseph P and Timothy J Monkelbaan, she is survived by her daughters, Joan (Late, Fred) Brickell, Kathleen (Ken) Brickell, and Nancy (Charles) Coleman. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tammy (James) Carter, Cynthia (Ken Ziolkowski) Brickell, Steven (Heidi) Coleman, Matthew (Jill Burt) Coleman, and Wendy (Frank) Esposito and 6 great grandchildren.
