Obituary of Clark Johns

Born March 11, 1923 in Town of Farmersville, New York, younger child of Harold and Dora Thurza (Stanbro) Johns. Following the death of his mother, he spent his early years with grandparents in Machias, New York. His growing-up years were with his re-married father and new mother, Ruth W. Bement, in Kenmore, New York, where he graduated from High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army from December 1942 to February 1946 as an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Instructor, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He married his high-school sweetheart, Shirley M. Farr, December 17, 1943. They raised three children together and remained married ever since. His working experience was varied, major ones being farming, construction, and the postal service. He retired from the United States Postal Service on May 4, 1985, with over 30 years of service, the last twelve as Postmaster at Lockport, New York. He served on the Starpoint Central School Board of Education from 1962-1975, including two terms as President, and on the Orleans-Niagara BOCES from 1979 to 1984, including two terms as President. He served on the Town of Cambria Zoning Appeals Board from 1991 through 1997, the last five years as Chairman. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Elnora (Johns) Dutcher, his son, Clark, Jr., and grandson, Nathaniel J. Sopiak. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, two daughters, Margaret (Daniel) Brown of Newfane, NY and Maryanne (J. Timothy) Sopiak of Burt, NY; also a daughter-in-law, Judy (Farmer) Johns of Woodlawn, TN, ten grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Remembrance will be announced at a later date.
