Obituary of Alfred Cappola

Alfred J. "Chief" Cappola passed away January 16, 2013 in Mease Country Hospital, Florida after a brief illness. Born in Lockport on May 10, 1924 he was the son of the late Joseph and Maria (nee Ferrara) Cappola. Chief served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945 and served in the following campaigns, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Air Offensive Europe. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, six Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and two Overseas Bars. Chief worked in production at Harrison Radiator for 30 years. He was the 2nd Ward alderman from January 1, 1972 until December 31, 1973 and he was 7th Ward alderman from 1984 to December 31, 1991. While the 7th Ward alderman Chief served as Common Council President from January 1, 1990 till December 31, 1991. Al also served on the Police Board from January 1, 1990 until December 31, 1992 and as a Civil Service Commissioner from the 1970's until 1983. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church where he served as president of the Holy Name Society for many years and also belonged to the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Council 319, VFW, B. Leo Dolan American Legion Post 410, served as president of the Lockport Democrat Committee, Lockport Bowling Association and was past president of the Pine Ridge Men's Club of Palm Harbor, FL. Also he was past part owner of Scapelliti's, past president of the Common Council, Police Commissioner, and Civil Service Commissioner all under the Rotondo Administration. Chief is survived by his wife Rose (nee Scapelliti) Cappola of Palm Harbor, FL; father of Mark (Patricia) Cappola of Hintington Station, NY and Patrick (Debrah) Cappola of Lockport; grandfather of Alexander, Matthew, Kristin, and Elizabeth; brother of Ida (Bernard) Mayflower of Niagara Falls and the late John Cappola; also survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Friday, January 25th from 4-9 PM in Prudden &amp; Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport where prayers will be offered Saturday, January 26th at 10:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 AM in All Saints Parish Oratory, 391 Market St., Lockport. Entombment will be in Glenwood Mausoleum. Donations to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated by the family.
