My poppy was the best person I have ever known, or as he would say "the bestest in the whole widest". Growing up he was like a father to me in the abscense of my own. He was more than just a grandfather but a friend, a guide and my hero. His strength and endurance through his battle with his disease proves what a fighter he was. He remained nothing but positive through the duration of his illness. Every person who had the opportunity to know David LaFountain, had their life touched like no other could do. His laughter, jokes, teasing, and compassion for his family and friends will never leave us. Now his suffering and pain is over, and he has taken flight on eagles wings to God above. The world has lost a phenomenal person, but heaven has gained him. He can now watch over us and guide us still, for he will be with us forever.

I did not know Mr. LaFountain personally...we never met. But through his daughter, Darlene, I saw a man who loved his family and loved life. I understand the loss for her as I lost my Daddy three years ago this month. That father-daughter relationship is special. Darlene, my friend, I hurt with you in this loss. I rejoice with you that his suffering is over. I pray that God will sustain you and comfort you in the days ahead. Love, Sharon Mitchem

Me and Poppy have been close ever since I can remember. I loved every aspect of his life from the bad acting of me when I was just a toddler with the way I pronounced my L's with a W, and to the completely random growls, all the way to how you would stick up for yourself for the past 4 years during your horrible and deadly battle of Leukemia. All of you pain and suffering is done and over now. We will all miss you very much. It will be very hard to think that you are acctually gone and not comming back. You have just always been there and that you were there for everything that ever happened, even if it came to laughing about it years later. Take care of, Poppy. Your Grandson, Josh

My dad is my hero. The thing I admired most about him, is that he never said anything negative about anyone. Those who knew him, could not help but love him. He was very intelligent and always had good advice. I am so very grateful for Roswell Park, who kept my dad with us for nearly seven years after being diagnosed with CML. For the majority of those years, he was able to do the things that he enjoyed most. I am also grateful for all of the time I was able to spend with him. He always made me laugh! Near the end of his time with us, my dad became very weak and tired. Although I miss him terribly, I thank God for ending his suffering. I will take my dad with me wherever I go in my heart...he was the best!

Dave is one of the finest men I have ever met in my life. When I was away from home, it gave me great comfort knowing my wife Dee, had her Dad so close to her. He was always there to help her with tips on projects she does at our home and I just felt she was safe with him nearby. Since my father-in-law could not drink alcohol, I would always shop for the finest rootbeer I could find to ensure I had something to serve him in a frosty mug. I will forever cherish the long chats we had in his living room while the ladies were in the kitchen. I will deeply miss this wonderful man and his presence... Lockport will never seem the same to me.

My Uncle Dave will be sadly missed. I could not have wished for a better man to emulate and was blessed that he was my Uncle which gave me an advantage in life. He was someone to look up to, and aspire to become. He was a loving husband; father, brother, uncle, friend, and grandfather. Any title you could give him he gave it his best. He never judged others, just pointing out the best traits of someone. He was an honest man, where anyone was blessed to feel his tough love. I will always remember playing baseball, horeshoes, basketball, and swimming on Akron St. His competitiveness and athleticism was unmatched, but he would still let you win once in a while. One of my fondest memories was watching him play horseshoes against his mom (Anne, my Grandma) and they would battle like it was the world championships. She would stay on one side to throw and Uncle Dave and I would go get the horseshoes and bring them back each time. I know now she was trying to wear him out, but it did not matter, he was playing horseshoes against his mom and he did not want to be anywhere else at that moment. He lived life the same way, in the moment. No worries, living each day to its fullest, tackling on any obstacles that were ahead. When he was diagnosed with his illness, I was shocked. This was a man who was never sick in his life, how can this happen? And at such a young age? Now I can understand why, he attacked this disease and never stopped giving life his best effort. Showing me yet again, how I should live my life; tackle what lies ahead, and never give up. Another great story I want to share was after his granddaughter Ashley was born. Always at Christmas time he would tease her about how Poppy had a “Supergift” for her, and she better be good. Ashley would run around telling us all how she would be getting a “Supergift” from Poppy, but only if she was a good girl. I hope she still remembers those Christmas’. I do, and I have now copied the same “Supergift” mantra with my girls now and then. Thanks Uncle Dave, I owe you one. One last thing, how can I not mention his passion for watching the “Ponies” as he called them. We would talk about the races or maybe about going to a casino and hope that one of us was winning at something. Aunt Elaine, Dee and Dar I want to express my deepest condolences for your loss. Our Love and prayers are with you. I hope we can talk sometime soon and relive all the good times. We will miss him deeply. Love, Kevin, Amy, Samantha, and Taylor Hackett
