R. Edward Groff entered into rest on Saturday, June 23, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 2, 1945, Ed was a lifelong resident of Lockport, NY. After graduating from LSHS in 1963, Ed spent a few years in Istanbul Turkey working for General Dynamics; for nearly 15 years after that, he was the proprietor of Groff's Tavern, then spent the next 30 years in the hospitality industry, the last 15 years at Brookfield Country Club in Clarence, NY. Ed was always an entertainer wherever he went, but some will recall him playing the trumpet for the Lockport Blazers Marching Band. He was active in politics early in his professional career serving as a city alderman in Lockport, NY.
Ed was predeceased by his father Clarence "Bud" Groff and mother June (nee McCauley) Groff
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 47 years, Lucia (nee Savino) Groff, his children Margot (Ed) Bailey and Brad (Joanne) Groff, his brother Thomas Groff, sisters Marcia (Paul) Wolfe and Brenda (Gary) Randolph, his grandchildren, Sean, Brad and Morgan Bailey and McKenna Groff; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ed will always be remembered for the joy that he brought to others everywhere he went. His infectious smile will be greatly missed by all, but no one more than his family that he loved so dearly. He was an inspiration to all; his positive attitude and outgoing personality helped everyone around him deal with his illness.
