Obituary of Lenore Pfeil
Please share a memory of Lenore to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lenore F. Pfeil of Lockport, NY, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side on June 10, 2012. Born November 11, 1914 into a large family in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Dixon) Moloney. She married Franklyn E. Pfeil Sr. on March 22, 1937.
Beloved mother of Maureen Culver, Marilyn (Pat) Patterson, Franklyn (Shelley) Pfeil Jr., and John Pfeil; grandmother of Jim, Yvonne, and Mark Culver, Scott and Eric Patterson, Caitlin, Gwenlyn, Frankie, and Eddy Pfeil, and Ryan, Blake, and Megan Pfeil; great grandmother of Stacy Culver, Lindsey Moretz and Megan, Tyler, and Samantha Hodil; great-great grandmother of four, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Dolores (Guido) Nordhaus, Regina (George) Bradley, Laone Moloney, John Paul (Marianne Sabow) Moloney, Maureen (Felix) Knebel, and Phyllis (Thomas) McMahon.
In 1914, Lenore was born into a large family in Toledo, Ohio. Her father worked out of that port as an engineer on the giant freighters that prowled the Great Lakes.
As a girl Lenore had a paper route. Most of the customers did not tip her when she collected each week. Those who did left one extra penny. Lenore loved her city and recalled ice skating on frozen sections of the Maumee River as a child. She especially enjoyed summer vacations from school, when she spent weeks at a time on the freighters with her father.
But things were not always tranquil. Lenore also recalled the sometimes deadly industrial strikes that plagued Toledo at the time.
Lenore graduated from Toledo Central Catholic High School and entered nursing college. Nursing college in those days meant that the student was either in the classroom or at the hospital, working nearly 'round the clock, for three straight years.
When she graduated, she got a job at the tuberculosis sanatorium (later known as Mount View) on the western outskirts of Lockport, New York. There she met and fell in love with a co-worker, Franklyn Pfeil. They married in 1937.
Lenore soon was hired at Lockport Memorial Hospital and Franklyn moved on to Harrison Radiator. They built a house on Dorchester Road, which was considered rural at the time.
In 1942, their daughter Maureen was born. She was followed by Marilyn in 1949, Franklyn Jr. in 1953, and John in 1954.
They moved from Dorchester Road to 96 Gooding Street--the big stone house right at the top of Clinton Street hill. Their final residence at 43 Lakeview Parkway, purchased in 1959, allowed Lenore to walk to work for the remainder of her long career at Lockport Memorial Hospital.
There she'd become Head Nurse and--a rarity indeed--the beloved supervisor of an entire generation of nurses whom she hired and mentored and nurtured.
Her devoted and beloved husband, Franklyn Sr., died in 1984. Each of her children went on to a professional career of his or her own.
When she passed away, she went as peacefully as she had lived. Her departure was no more remarkable than if she had stepped over a threshold from one room into another.
For seventy years she was a Mom and for fifty years she was a nurse, so her life was ceaselessly centered on others.
We shall love her forever, to infinity and beyond. We will not miss her forever, but only until we shall meet again.
And we shall, because He said so:
"The Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment--what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. "
