Obituary of Elizabeth Scirto

Elizabeth Kalenda Scirto passed away November 20, 2011 in Briody Health Care Facility. Born March 23, 1913 in Buffalo she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary (Barany) Kalenda. Elizabeth moved to Lockport in 1932 and helped run Scirto's Restaurant. She then moved to Washington DC in the late 1950's and was the hostess at The Madison, a DC landmark and favorite of the Washington elite. After 20 years in Washington DC Elizabeth retired and returned to Lockport. She enjoyed knitting, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. Elizabeth was affectionately known as "Toy Grandma" by her Texas grandchildren because every time she went to visit she brought toys.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, two sons Joseph Scirto and Bernard Scirto, Jr., siblings Lillian (Martin) Busha, Anna (Al) Kasprzycki, Helen (Andrew) Banfi, Mary Petronsky and Joseph (Virginia) Kalenda, step-brothers and sister Stephen Barnay, Nick Kalenda, John Kalenda, and Martha Kalenda. She is survived by her two daughters-in-law Gracie Scirto of Lockport and Mary Theresa Scirto of Texas; grandmother of Christopher (Cathleen) Scirto, Bernadette Scirto both of Lockport, Mark (Beth) Scirto, Theresa (Tomm) Wisloff, Joseph Scirto and Matthew (Laura) Scirto all of Texas; also survived by twelve great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call Sunday 4-7 PM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport. Interment will be in Cold Springs Cemetery.
