Obituary of Dr. Charles Martino

Dr. Charles J. Martino entered into rest on Friday, Nov 18th 2011. Born in Lockport, NY Feb. 10, 1929 he was the son of the late Attilio and Mary (DiCarlo) Martino.
An avid believer of continuing education Charles first entered the catholic seminary at age 12 and went on to accumulate a wealth of knowledge throughout his life, often sharing it with others. A registered nurse with both bachelor and master degrees from Marquette University, Milwaukee Wisconsin and Nurse Anesthetist Certification from Gon Zega University in Spokane Washington he launched his career in Milwaukee as a nurse antitheist at St Josephs Hospital. Moving to Lockport to care for his ailing father he then spent the next phase of his profession at Lockport Memorial Hospital as a nurse anesthetist. While at Lockport Memorial Charles, also A Registered Respiratory Therapist applied to the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) seeking approval to open an accredited school with intentions of filling the much needed newer field of respiratory therapy. After his curriculum guidelines were approved by the AMA Dr. Martino started the first respiratory therapy dept at Lockport Memorial.
He then moved his parents to the warmer climate of Florida and became a nursing instructor at Saint Petersburg College. Throughout his working vocation Charles earned his Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, Ft Lauderdale Florida. Known to many as philanthropist Charles's gracious donation of the bell tower located at the foot of the entrance to Cold Spring Cemetery provides comfort to many.
Brother of Constance (the late Bob) Verity, Jessie (the late Joe) Salmeri, Josephine (Les) Brewer. Predeceased by sisters Rosemarie Johnson, Theresa (John) Terranova, Marianne Drew and brother Andrew. Uncle to several nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews including the late Jonathan Verity. Dear friend of Kevin Arnett.
There will be no prior visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 391 Market St., Lockport on Saturday at 11 AM.
