United States Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Frederick Thomas Wilson, age 85, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 9, 2011 of colon cancer. Senior Chief Wilson retired from the Navy, serving from 1944 to 1970. During his tenure, he served on two submarines rescue ships (USS Penguin, USS Tringa), a diesel submarine, (USS Sailfish), a battleship (USS Wisconsin), a cruiser (USS Manchester), a destroyer (USS New), and an aircraft carrier (USS Wright). He was awarded the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal (4 times), and several other medals and commendations. After retiring from the Navy, Fred worked for the Department of Justice in the U.S. Attorney's Office until 1994. Fred and his wife belonged to several square and round dance clubs through the years, including the Andrews Jet Squares, Square Dealers, El-O-Ray Orbiters, Dancing Shadows, and the Roundaliers. Together they attended many festivals from 1979 through 1990, and conventions in Montreal, Canada; Kansas City, Missouri; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Fred was one of the founding members of The Tenth Hole Chapter #4651 of the INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF OLD BASTARDS on Saint Patrick's Day, 17 March 1988, located at the Tenth Hole at the Fort McNair Golf Course on Fort Leslie J. McNair, Washington, DC. For the past several years, meetings have been held at the Officer's Club at Fort McNair on a weekly basis on Fridays at 11:00am. Fred was the keeper of the "bucket". Fred married Joan Mae Perry at St. John's Church in Lockport, New York on June 18, 1949. Fred is survived and remembered by his loving wife of 62 years, Joan Wilson (formerly of Lockport, NY); his sons and their wives, Mark and Lora Wilson, Christopher and Kristin Wilson; daughters and their husbands, Cheryl Wilson, Diane (Wilson) and Ennes Abbring, Julie (Wilson) and Robert Haller; his brother, Norman C. Wilson of Lockport, New York; and his grandchildren William, Harlin, Brian, Emma, Cadence, Logan, Gregory, and Nathan. Fred is the son of the late Fred Norris Wilson and Kathryn D. Wilson of Lockport. Relatives and friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM in Prudden &amp; Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. Inurnment will be in Cold Springs Cemetery.
