James E. Bateman Sr. of Lockport, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 4th 2011 at the age of 78. Born on June 16, 1934 in Buffalo, NY the son of Harry Bateman and Pauline Bateman Wyles he graduated from Seneca Vocational High School, Buffalo, NY in 1952. Jim served in the U.S. Navy as Airman 1st Class from 1953 to 1957 and was stationed in various places including French Morocco and Pensacola, Florida. He had a 44 year career as a machinist at Curtiss Wright Corporation in Buffalo retiring in 1996. Jim married Rosemary Uhteg while he was stationed in Pensacola, Florida in 1956. The Bateman family moved to Lockport in 1969 where Jim and Rosemary have resided since. They celebrated their 55th anniversary on August 2, 2011. Jim converted to the Roman Catholic at St. John the Baptist Church in Lockport, New York in 1997 at the age of 62. He has served as Eucharist Minister, on the RCIA team and at Sister Helen's Food Pantry since it opened. Jim has also volunteered for Lockport Meals on Wheels for more than 20 years.
Jim will be dearly missed by his wife, Rosemary (Uhteg) Bateman, his son Jim (Donna) Bateman Jr. of League City, Texas, his daughters Debbie (Bob) Westcott of Holley, New York and Donna (Tony) Annalora of Lockport New York; 6 grandchildren, Tresa Westcott, Tara Westcott, Traci Westcott, Jessica Bateman, Danielle Bateman, and Anthony Annalora; Step-granddaughters Sara (Craig) Fuller and Amanda (Tim) Connor. "Tata" will always be remembered by many sisters in-law, brothers in-law, nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews.
Friends and family may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.
