Dear Aunt Deb,
I'm grateful for all the small pieces of your life I get to carry on into mine, even though you yourself are not here. Thank you for being an inspiration, for showing me what hard work and persistence looks like, and for loving us as your own. I always loved the way your face lit up when I mentioned the voicemails I used to leave on your phone as a child. I hope to live in a way that honors your memory, knowing that someday I will see you again.
I love you Aunt Debrica-abebra

I didn't remember the house number, but I certainly recognized the home! Its charm stood out with the large wooden ornamental wheel by the sidewalk and a verandah brimming with potted plants. That was just some of the warmth that surrounded Debbie, even before you experienced her kind hospitality. Engaging conversation included her creative projects, food or her niece who she adored. Debbie will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but I believe she is now at peace, reunited with her beloved sister.
Our condolences to the Thornton family from Don & Chambers family

My Sweet Aunt Debbie,
I miss you and the way you loved us all. I will miss talking to you daily and the way you lit up when I visited home. I will miss the way you loved my children and supported me through every life event. I will miss the way you told the story of my birth and boasted about the pink bouquet you picked for my mother. I will miss the tenderness and vulnerability you shared with me. I will miss your presence at my home and the days I spent in yours throughout my life. I will miss your beautiful eyes and the reddish toned lipstick that you applied when you were feeling well. I’m going to miss approaching your home in a car when in town and seeing you sitting on your porch.
Yes, the adult me recognizes that these bodies are time limited, but the little girl in me is not ready to say goodbye. I love you and always will.

It is with a heavy heart, that I am writing this in reference to Debbie. She was my eldest niece, and I am her youngest aunt. When Debbie left I was a little girl but I remember when she and Tessie came to my mother’s funeral.
She kept reminding me that she is older than I am, and I have to listen to her and I kept telling her; “but I am the aunt.” Of course, that didn’t work.
When they were here visiting I was having a problem with one of my friends, Debbie and Tessie wanted me to talk to my friend about it to set the record straight. Saying girl you have to take up for yourself, saying “She supposed to be your friend.” We had many laughs about that. Debbie will be forever missed.

The way she loved her son, Will reminds me of the poem A Mother’s Love.
A Mother’s love is something
that no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendored miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God’s tender guiding hand.

In times of loss, we find solace in the cherished memories we hold dear. My beloved niece Debbie will always have a special place in my heart. I remember the joy I felt when her mother, Tessie, and my brother Leroy Thornton, Sr. exchanged their vows in New York, and marked the beginning of a beautiful family with the arrival of their first child, Debbie.
Debbie’s generous and loving nature always left an impression on me. Tessie had a wonderful sense of style and ensured her children were always dressed to impress. I fondly recall a time in my teenage years when I asked my mother, Ms. Louise Thomas Thornton, for a new outfit. Debbie, overhearing my request, offered me some of her mother’s clothes without hesitation, knowing Tessie would happily agree, and she did.
As adults, we spent the time we shared together, laughing and reminiscing. I love Debbie and will miss her. Her loving and generous spirit will forever live on in my heart.
May she rest peacefully in God’s Kingdom.
With love and sympathy,
Mattie Pearl Thornton Hunter
