It’s difficult to imagine going back home and. not seeing Dave at family events. The last time I saw him was Antoine’s wedding and he looked so dapper and smart in his black suit. I know he was itching to get out of it.
There’s so many great memories, from first watching his hockey games very young and then growing up with kickball and steeplechase and two hand touch football in the backyard. I think David was the one who let the girls play. lol maybe he knew he could best us.
He was forever the jokester and told me long ago not sweat the small stuff.
My heart is sad and I’ll cherish the laughs and memories throughout those first 20 years or so.
God bless you all for taking care of him and being with him.
Love you all,
Sheila

When you’re a bartender you find a few regulars that just become more than that, they become friends, and in special cases just like family.
Dave was one of those special friends. He treated me like his own daughter and we got to the point of joking that Sundays were our “Daddy daughter day”. Without fail he would text me every single Sunday to check on me and wish me a good week ahead. He was a snow bird down here when I was still bartending and the entire establishment loved having him around. Most nights he would come in right before close to make sure i wasn’t alone walking out at the end of the night. He would bring me food if i was busy and missed dinner. He’d buy me a beer if i was having a tough day! Eventually his family sold their home down here and he moved back to Buffalo full time but that never stopped the texts, the Christmas and birthday cards, or the Super Bowl squares sent to me every year! One year he even drove from Buffalo to Cleveland to spend the weekend with my family, and visit the Rock n Roll hall of fame! I last saw him this past march when he came down for a week or two, we spent an entire day laughing and sharing stories, telling jokes, it was a wonderful day!
Dave was one of a kind and I am going to miss him very much! So thankful for all the times, laughs, and jokes we shared. Fly high Dave, there’s a Redstag and a Miller Lite waiting for you at the end of heavens bar!

Dear Family of David Oates,
I can remember when he was one of the Howard Ave. crew. He was such a cute kid always happy. He was the baby! I remember hearing he went to Culinary School and was a Postal Carrier. All the Oates always stopped and talked to my mom and she always tried keep us all updated on the neighborhood goings on. It was like one big family when we were growing up. I speak for all the McIntyre kids when I say we are very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.
