Obituary of J. Fitzgerald

J. Howard Fitzgerald passed away August 27,2009 in the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Health Care Facility. Born December 9,1916 in Lockport he was the Son of James J. and Mary (Mahoney) Fitzgerald. Known as "Howie" or "Fitz" was a graduate of Lockport High School where upon he entered service in the Co E 322nd Infantry, US Army and served from October 1940 to November 1945. Attaining the rank of T-Sgt. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater earning two Bronze Stars. Returning home he worked for Kennedy Bros. Men and Boys Store. He became the Coordinator for the Niagara County Civil Defense, retiring in 1981. Many would remember "Fitz" from Kenyon's Variety Store on Walnut where he worked after his retirement.
"Fitz" also served as what was then known as the 7th Ward as Alderman of the City of Lockport. An Avid Golfer and Bowler he was an inductee to the Lockport Bowling Hall of Fame; a member of St. John the Baptist Church, B. Leo Dolan Post 410 American Legion, VFW Post 2535 and Eagles Aerie 825.
He was the husband of the late Beatrice Oates Fitzgerald who passed away July 6th, 2008; father of Edwin Fitzgerald of New Port Richie, Florida and the late Michael Fitzgerald; grandfather of Patrick W, Fitzgerald of North Carolina. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his siblings Charles Fitzgerald, William Fitzgerald, Doris Fitzgerald, Helen Shelton, Barbara Pahl, Betty Kaufman and Jane Edwards.
There will be no prior visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass to be celebrated Friday September 4th,2009 at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist RC Church, 168 Chestnut street, Lockport.
