Dad was quite the jokester so it would not be any surprise that "April Fools Day" was one of his favorite days of the year. Dad would spend months planning on what joke he was going to play on his latest victim. One of his favorite targets for this day happened to be my mother and father in law (Guy's parents). One year he sent them a box carefully packaged full of nothing but styrofoam peanuts. The return address on the box was April Fool spelled backwards.
My father in law decided to get even and returned an old birthday card Dad had given him via "Special Delivery". My father had to sign for this. At that time, Dad was sitting on the School Board and there were some serious negotiations going on with one of the school's organizations. He was very upset as he signed for his package but laughed hysterically when he saw the card.
A few days later he drove to my in-laws home honking and waiving a white flag.
My father in law saw Dad and said "The German has surrendered".

Our prayers and condolences to the family. Lots of memories of the Fritz family. Remember the stories of when Uncle Merle was in the USAF. He also came up with some interesting Halloween costumes.

My husband Larry and I met Merle for the first time when we had a backyard BBQ to celebrate the Wedding of our son Andy to Merle’s granddaughter Jeanna . It was a very special time when George brought his dad up to Nova Scotia and enjoyed getting to know the family , we remember having many laughs listening to his stories !!

For Merle being the complete jokester he was he also had a side of him that would not let two teenage girls get away with anything. There are numerous times that I remember my cousin Sue, and I getting in trouble and Merle was quick to come up with a punishment that made two teenage girls cringe. Cleaning out his garage, we never seem to clean it to his satisfaction so he kept coming in and making us do more or going on a very long hike. These were two things that teenage girls did not want to do I will always remember his laughter, his jokes, and how he always made you feel so special. I will carry great memories of our family times together. Rest in peace.

Merle was a man who loved his family. He was proud of his many years work at Harrison radiator. He had the ability to meet a stranger and make them his friend over a short period of time. Merle in earlier years was a committeeman of the Republican Party. He served on the Lockport Public School Board of Education and the Niagara County BOCES board. He was a jokester purchasing countless books and was always ready to tell you the latest joke he discovered. In retirement, Merle and his wife Carol travelled throughout the United States and Canada on many senior trips. He will be missed .

George, so very sorry to learn of your dad's passing. My wife Linda and I send our condolences to you and the other members of his family.
(As you know) Merle, your mom, you and some of your siblings were next-door neighbors to my parents, my sister Lynn and me when y'all lived at 7 Beattie Ave in the 1960s. I remember your dad as being a very nice person. He took time to build snow forts and an ice slide for his children and other neighborhood kids, with the help of Fritz family dog Mischief. He let me run my ham radio antenna to a tree in the Fritz family back yard, and helped me anchor the antenna to the tree. My mom Rosemary and your mom Carol were friends.
During my genealogy research, from a 1949 Union-Sun & Journal newspaper article I discovered that your dad had been a member of the Lockport High School varsity basketball team.
In more recent years I've enjoyed reading about Merle's activities (and seeing photos of him) in posts on your Facebook page. I noted his love for ice cream. Clearly he was enjoying his golden years.
Yes, indeed a full life well lived. RIP Merle. You were part of my Lockport history.

Mr Merle Fritz was a genuine, honorable man! When I was in kindergarten, I was a good friend to his son and attended his son's birthday party. A few parents objected to me being present, as an African American. Mr. Fritz told those "objectors" that they could leave because I was not! (My Mom loved telling me the story as the years passed by.) He was brave for this time period and supported my friendship with his son. WE ARE GREAT FRIENDS SOME 60+ YEARS LATER!
RIH MR. MERLE FRITZ,
Marilyn Rose Mack
