Obituary of Ronald Swarthout

Ronald G. Swarthout, of Gasport, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011, embraced in the love of his wife and daughters. Ron, known as Poppie, Papa or Grandpa to his beloved grandchildren, was born on June 6, 1942 in Medina, NY, to Doris Mary Humphrey Jones Swarthout and James Melvin Swarthout. He graduated from Royalton-Hartland High School in 1962 and served in the Army National Guard from 1964 until 1970 as a Specialist, 5th Class, Company C, 104th Engineering Battalion, Lockport. He worked at Loud and Wendel in Middleport, NY for 10 years and then Harrison Radiator Delphi for 30 years before his retirement in 2002. Ron was a lifetime member, as well as President, of the Hartland Conservationist Club. He was a Hunter Safety Instructor for 42 years as well as a Bow Hunter educator. He enjoyed trap, pistol and target shooting, hunting, fishing, playing euchre, reading western novels and spending time with his precious grandchildren.
Ron is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan J. (Austin) Swarthout; beloved daddy of Melissa (James) Bedford of Burt, Melinda (Darin) O'Shea of Middleport and Melanie (Noel) Eggert of Fairview, NC; adored grandfather of Amber, Justin, Courtney and Morgan Bedford, Delaney and Rhiannon O'Shea, Alicia, Amelia and Aidan Eggert; brother of Raymond Jones of Lockport as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He is predeceased by his brother Edwin Jones and sisters Bessie Jones Heidemann and Lorraine Swarthout Humphrey.
Calling hours will be Monday, June 6, from 4 to 7 pm in Prudden & Kandt, 242
Genesee Street, Lockport where funeral services, officiated by Pastor Rodney Klinzing of Zion Lutheran Church, Gasport, will be held on Tuesday, June 7, at 11 am. Internment will be in Orangeport Union Cemetery, Orangeport Road, Gasport. The family would appreciate donations, in Ron's memory, to the Gasport Lions Club or Niagara Hospice.
