Obituary of William D. McCandlish
William Dean McCandlish, he was born July 13, 1935 in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late Vernon and Marie (Stidman) McCandlish.
Bill graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Engineering, and received a Masters in Business at Missouri University. In 1959 he married Manning Wilbourn and they celebrated their 63rd anniversary in 2022. They moved to Lockport in 1978 where he was the Plant Manager for the Upson Company, which later became the Buffalo Paper Mill. When Bill retired he learned to fly, acquired his own plane, and enjoyed flying for a number of years.
Bill drove for the American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels, and gave transportation to others in need. He was a Boy Scout Leader and was himself an Eagle Scout. Bill was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where for many years he ran the sound system at church services. He was always an active member in church programs.
Bill is survived by his wife, Manning Wilbourn McCandlish and a son, Vernon Lowe (Patricia) McCandlish of Virginia, and daughters, Margaret Marie (Kelly Rose) McCandlish of Wilmington, NY, and Anne Manning (Curt) Emenhiser of Michigan; eleven grandchildren, Maggie, Sara, and Annie Rose-McCandlish, Jesse and William McCandlish, Faith Lam, and Steven, Courtney, and Alex Miller, and Clay and Brooke Emenhiser, and a brother-in-law James L. (Donna) Wilbourn. He was a devoted friend of Bill W. for 35 years.
Friends may call on Saturday, April 1st from 10 AM – 12 Noon at Prudden and Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport. A Memorial Service will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 75 East Avenue Lockport, Saturday, April 1st, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Niagara Hospice, or a charity of one's choice would be appreciated by the family.
