Dear family, I am so sorry for your loss. I was one of Kathy's housemates her senior year at Witt. She is an amazing woman-probably one of the most creative people I have ever met. I feel so blessed to have known her. She will be greatly missed. I'm praying for you.

Dear Carol, Maureen, and Dan, Kathy was one of my best friends from college--playful, intelligent, radiant, full of wonder and curiosity. She had the ability to see the potential in and others and cultivate--obviously, this is what made her such a skilled teacher but it also served all those who had the privilege of being close to her. I know that my career as a poet was nurtured, in part, by her appreciation of all things artistic. Over the years, Kathy had a habit of disappearing from and reappearing in my life. What an honor to be her friend and neighbor in Pittsburgh while she worked on her PhD. What an honor--and what fun--to be at her wedding. Though she encountered more sadness in her life than she deserved, she was resilient. Seeing her twice in the last six years, I could only be grateful for the way this friend, this passionate and beautiful woman embraced the world. I will never forget her; and I will try to honor her and the God she served by being as creative soul like she was. Love, Lew

Mrs. McCarthy, Danny & Maureen: I am sorry for the bereavement of your beloved daughter and sister. The news of Kathy's passing is so overwhelmingly sad. My memories of Kathy as neighbor, parishioner, and dear family friend are of a bright and hopeful teenager - eager to make her mark in the world. Kathy enlivened any group with her intelligence and caring soul. Her passing is an immense loss to all who knew her. My heart is broken.

Dear Kathleens Family, Our sincerest condolences to Kathleen's entire family. Kathleen was a great friend to our family when we came to Pittsburgh from Finland. She had a big heart and she was always joyful, especially with our half-a-year son Elias (who is now twenty and half). She also shared her life with us by inviting our family and Jarmo's parents Liisa and Leo to stay with her family during our trip to Canada. Katri was a dear friend to our family and she will be deeply missed. Jarmo & Marikka Levonen & Family

Dear McCarthys, I was so shocked and saddened by the news of Kathy's death. She was one of my best friends from Wittenberg. She lead the Bible study I joined as a new Christian. Her exhuberance and creativity made Phillipians an unforgettable experience. We were also in the same sorority and I was blessed to have many heart to hearts with her. She had great wisdom, compassion, and love for the Lord. I am grieved for your loss and hope that you will find comfort in your memories of her, and in the hope that we will see her again in heaven. Much love, Mary Walker Scarberry
