Born January 26, 1941 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of Kenneth D. and Doris E. (Whitt) McCollum. Joan grew up on the McCollum family dairy farm and remained proud of her connection to farming and her family her entire life. She was a graduate of the Royalton-Hartland High School Class of 1959 and worked for Davison Road Optical from the 1980s until 2001. She was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church in Lockport where she was an Elder and Deacon, played in the bell choir, made peanut brittle, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels through Lockport Presbyterian Home. She enjoyed traveling, hiking and taking long walks, gardening, cross-country skiing, knitting, reading, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Joan was predeceased by first husband, Douglas C. Buri. She is survived by their children Susan (Thomas) Blechinger, Anne (Jeffrey) Kolbe, Mark (Carolyn) Buri; grandchildren Andrew Blechinger, Emmy Kolbe, Alyssa Kolbe, Joshua Buri, Matthew Buri, and Meghan Buri.
