Obituary of Jean Gillings

Jean Gillings (nee VanDusen) born April 15, 1930 passed away March 6, 2011. She graduated from Lockport High School in 1946 and was the treasurer of the reunion committee for many years. Jean attained an Associates Degree for Dietectics from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She worked in the kitchens of the Sanatorium at Mount View Health Care Facility and Lockport Memorial Hospital on diets for the patients. Jean was the cafeteria manager for the Royalton-Hartland Central School District for eleven years and she retired from Briarwood Manor as the dietician/manager in 1989. When her children, Linda (Stanley) Miller, Patricia Gillings, Barbara (Jeffrey) Benz, and Norman Gillings, were growing up she was involved in the Ladies Home Bureau, Mothers Club and she also taught knitting and cooking to many 4-Her's. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She also belonged to the Lockport Court #145 Order of the Amaranth and was treasurer for the 79 masters. In 1980 she joined Eastern Star and was a member of the Angelus Chapter #559. Jean married Richard "Bud" Gillings in 1951, together they enjoyed square dancing with the Col-B Squares for many years. They traveled out west to Calgary, Alberta, Vancouver, Lake Louise, Jasper, Canada and Banff. In later years she enjoyed line dancing, being with the Bag Ladies, helping in the kitchen, and on the road with Meals-On-Wheels for 21 years. Jean associated with the Red Hats, belonged to the Dale Association and was a pen pal to a student from Washington Hunt Elementary School. Besides her children Jean is also survived by her grandchildren Benjamin, Abraham, Ezekiel, April, Grady Miller, and Alison, Joseph, Juliet Benz; sister of Marilyn (late Ben) Roenish and the late Joan (Wilbur) Rhinehart and Marcia (John) Williamson; also several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Wednesday 12-3 and 6-9 PM in Prudden &amp; Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport where funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 AM. Interment will be in Hartland Central Cemetery. Memorials to the First Baptist Church in Lockport, Order of the Eastern Star, Angelus Chapter or to Meals-on-Wheels would appreciated by the family. <h3>Visitation</h3> Relatives and friends may call Wednesday 12-3 and 6-9 PM <h3>Services</h3> Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 AM at the funeral home. <h3>Interment</h3> Interment will be in Hartland Central Cemetery.
