Obituary of Richard P. Sherman
Richard P. Sherman passed away February 26, 2021 in Lockport, NY. Born July 9, 1936 he was the son of the late Frances “Tutt” and George Milton Sherman. He served in the US Army from 1955-1961. Richard retired from Harrison Radiator after 36 years, he worked in the tool room followed by the model shop as a supervisor. He and his very good friend Ed Jablonski were famous for their many workplace pranks. He enjoyed spending time and going to any of his kids and grandkids sporting events, loved bartending at the Canalside Inn, sharing stories and shooting the bull with people. He loved the local sports teams, the Sabres and Bills (or Billy goats as he used to call them). Every August the family got the speech that this could be the year for the Bills (he was almost right this year). He had a couple famous stories that he loved to repeatedly tell his family. The first one being a part of the longest pitching duel in Midget League baseball. In 1953 he was then pitching for the Kiwanis and Eddie Van Dusen pitching for VFW hurled 17 scoreless innings before VFW won 1-0 at the bottom of the 17th. The second story was the time a Buffalo sportscaster on the evening news was talking about the regional track and field championship and the half mile featured two rising stars and a “dark horse, Dick Sherman of Lockport.” Before the race , coaches told him to follow the runner in the red shorts- so he followed a guy in red shorts but it was the wrong guy. After the 2nd lap his coaches were screaming that it was the wrong runner. He then caught the rising star but lost by a tenth of a second.
Besides his wife Sandra (Robson) Sherman he is survived by his sister Sandra (Paul) Haber; his sons Michael (Cher Barringer) Sherman of Mooresville, NC, Somers Sherman; daughter Stacy (Tom) Hildreth. Grandfather of Brianna (Eric) Hansen, Zia Sherman, Hunter, Logan and Josh Sherman, Jona and Brady Hildreth; Great- Grandfather to Emma Hansen. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
