Obituary of Henry B. Newman

Henry B. Newman passed away May 23, 2017 in Buffalo General Medical Center. Born December 8, 1938 in Jersey City, NJ he was the son of Henry B. and Marcella (Cullen) Newman. Henry served in the US navy from 1956 to 1959 and earned his Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Buffalo State in 1974. He started working for the Lockport Police Department in 1961 was promoted to sergeant in 1965, lieutenant in 1972, captain in 1975 and retired as Chief in 1999. Henry also went through the FBI Academy in the 107th Session. In 1969 he was awarded the DeSales Booster Club Award for Valor Beyond the Call of Duty, was the Moose Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1976, 2011 Lockport High School Distinguished Alumni Award and in 2015 First Hole In-One at the Wedgewood Country Club in Lakeland, FL. Henry was a founding member of the Niagara County Crime Strike Force, was a member of the NYS Chiefs of Police Association, Niagara County Judges & Police Association of which he served as past president, Buffalo State Alumni Association, as well as the Hickory Club, Elks, Moose and Navy/Marine Club. He also served on the board of the American Red Cross and the Boy Scouts Explorer Post. Henry enjoyed playing golf, bowling, hunting, fishing, and was an avid reader. Henry was the epitome of success. He led by example in his career as a husband, father, grandfather & friend. He will be missed by many.
Henry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia (Litz) Newman; his children Lisa (Michael) Denniston and Kevin (Michelle) Newman; grandchildren Kyle (Megan) Rankie, Zachary, Allison, and Adam Newman; great grandchildren Rileigh and Jack Henry Rankie; sisters Elizabeth Schultz and Marcy (Henry) Ferguson; sister-in-law Gretchen (Robert) Reggentine; also several nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his brother David (Madeleine) Newman.
There will be no prior visitation. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 27th at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist RC Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.
