To me, Joe was a teacher, a golfer,a great artist and a good friend. My Mother made coffee for the PTA and Joe always said it was good coffee. He was my 8th Grade Homeroom Teacher at NorthPark, made me look foolish on a Golf Course, but always had a minute or two to chat while at the Market Street Art Gallery. He will be sadly missed by many folks in and around Lockport. Joe, Rest in Peace.

I am one of the thousands of lives Mr. Whalen touched as a teacher. He encouraged me to follow my dreams and be all I can be. He made a difference in my life and for that I am grateful. He is one of the reasons I became a teacher. Sending thoughts and prayers to his family.

We go through life thinking we have a large number of friends, when we actually have many acquaintances. Joe Whalen was a friend, not only to me but to many in Lockport, in WNY, in the education world and the art world. For me, the friendship with Joe continued over 75+ years, from the time we were 12 year olds, testing Sister Mary Julia's patience in teaching would be artists until a few days ago. The opportunity to exchange thoughts with him by phone and occasionally in person is a loss but the pleasure of seven plus decades of true friendship will be a comfort.

One of a kind comes directly to mind to me when it comes to JOSEPH WHALEN.
I'm so happy when I spent about 2 hours just talking to Joe last May at his home. Of course his wife Kay also joined in as we recalled highlights about our past and present family members.
Joe's legacy will live on forever. His spirit will always continue to be there. His family is truly awesome too.

We were deeply saddened by the passing of our cherished, old friend and North Park colleague, Joe Whalen, who made us far better human beings for having known him. Joe leaves behind a tremendous legacy of lessons he taught by example… not just to the legions of students, who adored him, but also to everyone else, whose lives have been enhanced by the magnificence of his artistic talent, his charming Irish wit, and most of all, his astonishing ability to overcome enormous adversities with his generosity of spirit. Rest in peace, Sweetheart.
Our love, prayers, and deepest sympathy go out to dear Kay and their entire family, of whom he was so rightfully proud.
Renee and David, Lockport, NY

Dear Kay & Family, I am so sorry for your loss. The Burke,LaGraff,Whalen family bond was (is) unlike any I have since observed. Lasting thru 3 generations and Joe was one of the main reasons. He has touched so many with his wit, wisdom and art. God bless you all. Love, Arnie

Although I am very much an adult, I still refer to him as Mr Whalen out of respect! Such a classic! I remember him so much from school. As an adult living outside of NY, I "had" to have a piece of his art work in my home. I chose one of his locks works so it would be a conversational piece of he and my home town... May he rest in peace. Prayers are with his family....

May his family take comfort in the commonly held certainty that Joe was, and is, larger than life. May we all pursue our passions as profoundly as he wished us to, acknowledging that we will likely not attain his level of mastery-it is about the journey. I am fortunate to have several pieces of his wonderful art which have been proudly displayed in locations far and wide....they are my treasures,
When I was a very little girl, Joe asked me what I would like for him to paint for me. I said a witch with pointy boots. If it should happen to turn up, please let me know.
I will be with you in spirit as you celebrate his colorful and extraordinary life, art and inspiration to the entire community. Peace to all.

Dear Kay and Family,
We so enjoyed your Joe! It was always a treat to have him drop in on us whe we lived on Lock Street. Joe was the essential Lockport character. His paintings represented the soul of the city, from the Rage Bar in lowertown to the fantastic Erie Canal locks. Joe also helped his fellow men when they were down. He lent a helping hand to those in need thru his volunteering at AA. And he never asked for anything in return.
Bless Joe, and may he rest in peace.
