Obituary of J. Paul Leyden

J. (Joseph) Paul Leyden, 86, of Lockport, NY passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2015 surrounded by his legacy of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren under the compassionate care of Niagara Hospice House.
He was born on August 15, 1929 to the late William G. and A. Laura (Nugent) Leyden.
Paul was a life-long resident of Lockport, attending and graduating from Lockport schools. While in college, he answered the call to serve in the Army. He was stationed in Munich during the Korean War first as a medic, then as a military policeman from 1951-1953.
In 1957, J. Paul began his esteemed, life-long career at the Lockport Police Department. Early in his career, he received several meritorious service commendations. He was driven to better himself and therefore the L.P.D. Paul was very proud to be the first Lockport Police officer to graduate from the prestigious FBI National Academy. He worked hard in order to be promoted through the ranks, ultimately to Chief of Police. Serving as Lockport’s Chief of Police for nearly 17 years, he was instrumental in the design of the state-of-the-art police station in the new municipal building. He is also credited with instituting many upgrades and cutting-edge technology of the day. As well, J. Paul was instrumental in the establishment of the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy. After 34 years of community service, he retired from LPD in 1991.
J. Paul was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Martha Palia Leyden. He is survived by his 3 daughters, AmyJo (Paul) Achtyl, Ann Vetter, and Paula (Jeffrey) Miller. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kyle (Jamie) Achtyl, Keith (Julie) Achtyl, Kevin Achtyl, Andreas Vetter, Anneliese Vetter, Brenna (Christopher) Baxter, and Erin Miller. He was blessed with 4 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. His beloved companion, Nancy Prendergast, also survives him.
Calling hours will be Friday, October 30, 2015 from 3-7PM at Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday, October 31, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Church, 168 Chestnut Street, Lockport. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
