Obituary of Dr. Peter M. Calamel

Dr. Peter M. Calamel passed away on the 12th of October as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Peter was a native of South Shields, England, born on May 26th 1928 to Joseph and Elizabeth Calamel. He was a graduate of Durham University where he earned his dental degree and then went on to serve faithfully in the Royal Air Force. In 1958 Peter immigrated to the United States to further his studies at the University of Colorado in general surgery and on to plastic surgery specializing in head and neck reconstructive surgery. Peter completed his residency at Nassau Hospital & Kings County Hospital in Queens where he perfected his abilities. Upon completion he moved to Buffalo to practice at Roswell Park and then Kenmore Mercy where he became one of the most respected surgeons in his discipline training countless aspiring physicians in this complex field. While at Roswell Park he met his loving wife Barbara A. Kopetsch a nurse, while suturing her finger and married in 1968. Peter went on to serve as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Kenmore Mercy for 20 years continuing to serve the community for close to 40-years only to retire at the age of 79 indicative of his true passion, treating cancer patients, burn victims and saving lives. He will be sorely missed by all those who were fortunate to work with him, treated by him and all the friends he made in his adopted country and city. He was a humble man who loved Skiing, Sabres hockey, but most of all his friends and family. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his children Adrian (Ann), Ian (Tanja), Jonathan (Carrie) and Trevor (Meghan) as well as his grandchildren Alexander, Courtney, Emily, Elizabeth, Avery and Henry. Friends may call Thursday Oct. 15th 6-8 PM and Friday Oct. 16th 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday Oct. 17th at 9 AM in All Saints RC Parish, 76 Church Street, Lockport. Interment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Lockport.
