Obituary of Emerson Carlton

Emerson B. Carlton of Lockport died on May 29, 2009. He was born in 1923, the son of the late Frank A. Sr. and Fannie Farnsworth Carlton.
Emerson was a graduate of Lockport High School, class of 1941 and a 1950 graduate of Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1943 to March 1946 and was in combat with the 243rd Combat Engineer Battalion, Third Army in the battles of Ardenne (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe and was awarded a Bronze Campaign Star for each battle. He served as the Administrator of the Village of Medina, retiring in 1986, he previously worked for the New York State Office for Local Government.
Emerson was an active member of the Lockport Emmanuel United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Town of Lockport Historical Society and the Genesee-Orleans Cornell Club and served as its President.
Emerson's previous activities included serving on the Board of Directors for Medina Armory Action Committee, Association for Retarded Children, and Western Orleans United Way. He was also a member City of Lockport Republican Committee, Rotary Club of Medina, Newfane Golden Age Club and the Niagara County Genealogy Society. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Dale Association.
Mr. Carlton served for ten years as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and with Briody Nursing Home. He traced his family genealogy and his research on the Carlton family has been donated to the Niagara County Genealogy Society.
Mr. Carlton was predeceased by his wife, Ellamae F. Rehberg Carlton and by his son, Steven P. Carlton. He is survived by his daughter: Julie (John) Litteer of Pennellville, NY, his son: Scott (Karen) Carlton of Medina, NY, and three granddaughters: Kelly Litteer, Nicole Carlton, and Melissa Carlton, a sister: Jeanette Rhinehart, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers: Donald, William, Frank Jr., Wallace, and David. Four Carlton brothers: Donald, Wallace, David, and Emerson served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
The family will greet mourners from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday June 2nd, which will be followed by a brief funeral service at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 75 East Avenue in Lockport, NY. An Internment service for the family will follow. Memorials may be made to the church. The family suggests that all honor Emerson's memory by performing an act of kindness for friends and for strangers.
