Lloyd Smith Obituary

Lloyd Knowles Smith, 90 of Lockport, passed away Thursday April 23, 2009. A life long resident, he was educated in city schools and attended Purdue University before entering W.W.II. He attained rank of Army Lieutenant. Mr. Smith was born April 8, 1919, the son of Sherman Benedict Smith and Ethel O. Knowles Smith. In 1942 he married the former Jane E. Stevenson of Lockport, in Williamsburg, VA. After his discharge from the Army, they returned to Lockport.


Mr. Smith was an engineer with Harrison Radiator (GM) before he and his wife began The Retailer, Niagara County's first weekly shopping guide, in July of 1948. He retired from the family business in 1978. Mr. Smith was a former member of the Tuscarora Club of Lockport, American Legion Post 410 and the Lockport Kiwanis Club, where he produced that organization's news letter. He was an extensive reader and enjoyed music, accomplishing the Clarinet and Saxophone.

Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife Jane of 57 years in August, 1999.


Mr. Smith is survived by a son David K. (Bonnie) Smith, a daughter Diana J. Smith all of Lockport, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a sister Edith C. Smith of New York City, a nephew, Dr. Paul Smith of West Hartford, CT and a dear friend Julia Brown ofMiddieport. He was the brother of the late Melvin G. Smith.


Relatives and close friends are invited to a funeral service Monday at 10 AM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Donations to may be made to the Lockport Salvation Army, 50 Cottage Street Lockport or the Wrights Corners Fire Co, 4043 Lake Avenue Lockport, would be appreciated in place of flowers.
