Ralph M. Garlock of Lockport died peacefully at Lockport Memorial Hospital Wednesday, February 4 after a brief illness. Born June 12, 1923 to Charles Garlock and Jesse Harper, the fourth of their six children, Ralph was a life long resident of Lockport. A graduate of Lockport High School, he entered the United States Army, serving in the Military Police during the second World War, attaining the rank of sergeant. Upon Ralph's return to civilian life he began his 40 year career with Abstract Title Company as a title searcher, retiring from now Ticor in 1985 as a Vice-President of the corporation and manager of its Lockport office. A high point of his career was the role he played in the transfer of property in support of the Robert Moses Niagara Power Project. On October 30, 1948 Ralph wed the former Mary Elizabeth Ryan who survives him. Ralph and Mary, who retired as a nursing supervisor from Lockport Memorial Hospital, have five children: David (Kathy) of Minneapolis MN, Thomas (Laurie), Maryanne (James) Quartararo, James (Terry) and Patricia (Raymond) Degan all of Lockport.
Throughout his life Ralph was an active Roman Catholic, attending Saint Mary's Parish for many years and serving as a member of the Parish Council and was an active volunteer with the Parish Boy Scouts. In recent years he was a member of St. John's Parish, serving for a time as usher. Ralph at various times in his life enjoyed bowling, golf and travel, and volunteered in the community with the Red Cross and other organizations.
Ralph was devoted to his family, particularly his twelve grandchildren: Shawn (Lynne) Costello, Shannon (Geoffrey) Volland, Jennifer Garlock, Erin Garlock, Kimberly Garlock, Timothy Garlock, Kate Garlock, David Degan, Lindsay Degan, Alex Garlock, Courtney Garlock and Ellyn Garlock. There were never too many children around for Ralph- he reveled in their energy and they loved their "Papa". Ralph is also survived .by his siblings, Mary Weinheimer, Robert and Howard (Sharon). He was predeceased by his brothers Charles (Norma) and James (Betty) and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call Friday, February 6th from 4- 8 PM at Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 7th at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 168 Chestnut Street, Lockport. Interment will be in Cold Spring Cemetery. Memorials to the church or to Niagara Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
