James Magnus Lange, passed away January 10, 2009, after a short illness, on the day before his 85th birthday. Born January 11, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Lange was the youngest son of John H. Lange and Rhoda Y. Lange. His natural mother, Florence Magnus Lange, died at his birth. He attended schools on Long Island and graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1942 where he played the trumpet and clarinet.
Following high school, Mr. Lange attended Alfred University where he studied ceramic engineering. After a year at Alfred he interrupted his education to serve with the Army Air Corps in the Philippines during World War II. - Following his service he returned to Alfred University and received his engineering degree in 1949. He married Nancy M. Post shortly after returning from the war and they had two children, James Andrew Lange and Nancy Post Lange.
Lange's long career took him many places. He started out as an engineer at the Trenton Pottery in Trenton, NJ in 1949 and then was in purchasing at Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, PA through the 1950s. In 1960 he joined the Charles Taylor Sons Company and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, then Chicago, Illinois and then back to Cincinnati. In 1973 he moved to Canastota, NY to join the family company in Syracuse, J.A. Lange, Inc. He retired in 1995.
He and his wife Nancy moved to Cazenovia, NY in 1988 where they became active participants in many community activities. In his retirement, Mr. Lange helped hang numerous art exhibits with his wife and they sailed their boat on Oneida Lake with the Oneida Lake Sailing Club. He enjoyed reading, golf and Republican politics.
In 2006 he moved to Lockport, NY to be near his daughter and her family. In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by his brother, J. Andrew Lange, a granddaughter, Jennifer R. Pleskow, a grandson, Andrew M. Lange, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Mr. Lange was predeceased by his wife, Nancy M. Lange and a granddaughter, Angelique Marie Sidel.
Local arrangements handled by Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 Saturday, January 17th followed by a celebration of life at the Tait Funeral Home in Cazenovia, NY. Contributions to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094, would be appreciated by the family.
