Obituary of Msgr. Walter Kern

Msgr. Walter O. Kern passed away November 15, 2008 after a lengthy illness in Briody Health Care Facility.� Born June 14, 1930 in Lockport he was the son of the late Jacob and Lydia (Rosenberger) Kern, Sr.� Msgr. Kern attended Divine Word Preparatory Seminary in Girard, PA then went on and attended Our Lady of the Angels Seminary, Niagara University, North American College, Rome, Italy, Christ the King Seminary, St. Bonaventure University and finished at Christ the King Seminary, East Aurora.� He got ordained on March 1, 1958 in St. Joseph New Cathedral, Buffalo by Bishop Joseph Burke.� Msgr. Kern started in 1958 at Missionary Apostolate, St. Joseph, Bliss, became the Chaplin for the Boy Scouts in 1959 and also served as the Assistant at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Harris Hill.� In 1971 he became the Assistant at St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus, Niagara Falls and carried additional responsibilities as the Diocesan of Apostleship of Prayer in 1971 and Executive Secretary of Diocesan Liturgical Committee in 1973.� In 1974 Msgr. Kern became the Pastor of Blessed Trinity, Buffalo and in 1984 also became the Director of Catholic Pamphlet Society and in 1985 was the Diocesan Archivist.� In 1988 Msgr. Kern was named Prelate of Honor and in 1990 became the pastor of Sacred Heart in Bowmansville of which he retired from in 2001. � Msgr. Kern was a member of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, Alumni Association of North America College, Archivist of the Cause of Father baker, International Institute of the Heart of Jesus, was the Chaplin for Diocesan Native American Association, hosted a weekly radio program, Day by Day, on WBEN-AM radio, Archivists of Western New York, Niagara County Historical Society, Old Fort Niagara Association, Cobblestone Society, the Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, Fillmore Leroy Area Community Development Corp. and the Albright Knox Art Gallery. � � Msgr. Kern also was award with the William Wells Brown Award from the Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, the Owen B. Augspurger Local History Award from the Buffalo &amp; Erie County Historical Society and also was a writer including in &amp;quot;Contemporary Authors (Vol. 117, 1986), completing four books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles. � Msgr. Kern is survived by his two brothers Jacob P. (Joan) Kern, Jr. and Jerome J. (Mary Alice) Kern both of Lockport.� He is the brother-in-law of Margaret Kern also of Lockport and predeceased by his brother Hubert F. Kern.� Msgr. Kern is also survived by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. � Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Prudden &amp; Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport.� A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Edward Kmiec on Friday at 10:30 AM in St. Mary&amp;#39;s Roman Catholic Church, 5 Saxton St., Lockport.� Interment will be in St. Mary&amp;#39;s Cemetery.� Memorials to the St. Vincent DePaul Society c/o St. Mary&amp;#39;s RC Church or to the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family.�� <h3>Visitation</h3> Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 2-4 and 7-9 PM <h3>Services</h3> Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at 10:30 AM
