Obituary of Douglas Richards

Douglas Coulter Richards, 92, formerly of Blacksburg, VA, originally from Warrens Corners, NY, and a long time resident of Barker, NY, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 11, 2010.
He was the beloved husband of the late Mina Hetherley Richards and father of Beth R. (Thomas) Godfrey of Blacksburg, VA, and Paul D. (Claudia) Richards of Roanoke, VA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Rachel (Phil) Chipley of Roan Mt., TN; Paul Godfrey; Charis (John) Richardson; David Godfrey all of Blacksburg, VA; Douglas Richards, William Richards, Stephen Richards, John Richards, and Paul David Richards, all of Roanoke, VA; one great-grandson, Ethan Chipley; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of John Richards of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Jerry Richards of Williamsburg, VA; the late Ruth Chormann of Lewiston, NY; and the late Bill Richards of Warrens Corners, NY.
He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army Air Corps as a B-24 bomber pilot in the 15th Air Force. The 456th bomb group was stationed in Foggia, Cerignola, Italy. Soon after the war he became the owner of Barker Dry Goods and Richards Insurance Agency in Barker, NY, which he operated until the 1970's. From 1977 to 1992, he and Mina retired to Waxhaw, NC, where they volunteered with Jungle Aviation And Radio Service (JAARS), a support organization for Wycliffe Bible Translators. Then in 1992 they moved to Blacksburg, VA, to be closer to their two children.
Friends may call at the Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport, NY, on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from 9:30 AM-11 AM where funeral services will immediately follow. Interment will be in North Ridge Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Logan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please consider Blacksburg Christian Fellowship, P.O. Box 813, Blacksburg, VA 24063.
