Mariella Forsyth Obituary

Mrs. Mariella (Cain) Forsyth passed away unexpectedly at her home in Lockport on Thursday, August 7, at the age of 91. She was born on June 11, 1917 to William J. and Louise Day Cain at McNall's Corners, N.Y. Several years later the family moved to Lockport. Mrs. Forsyth was a 1935 graduate of Lockport High School and received her RN degree from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Following her graduation, she was employed by the Lockport City Hospital for many years. However, the last 17 years of her career she worked for the Niagara County Health Department from which she retired in the early 1980's. In 1947, Mariella Cain married Holden Forsyth in Rochester, NY. They raised their two sons Craig C. and Todd Rae (TR) Forsyth in Lockport. Mrs. Forsyth was also a breast cancer survivor for more than 50 years. She was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 1959-1960 at Lockport City Hospital at a time when breast cancer was not a house hold word as it is today. Her husband and her sons preceded her in death more than 30 years ago. She was a life long member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and traveled throughout the world during her retirement years including trips to Australia, New Zealand, England and Hawaii.

To her family and friends Mariella Forsyth was lovingly known as wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend. But to her co-workers at the Health Department she was known as a compassionate, kind and giving woman caring for many of Niagara County's sick and injured. During her visits throughout the county, if someone was unable to afford their medication, health care or even groceries she would quietly provide the assistance without remuneration.

Mrs. Forsyth is survived by three of her seven siblings, Mrs. Helen (Cain) Ostrom of Lockport, Mrs. Hazel (Cain) Bareis Fitzgerald of Penfield, N.Y. and Mrs. Patricia (Cain) McCabe of Albuquerque, N.M. as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be no prior visitation. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 AM in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street, Lockport. Interment will be in Cold Spring Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
