Betsy Glaser Hurley passed away unexpectedly, Saturday June 21, 2008 in Jennersville, PA., just three weeks after returning from a trip to Italy, Greece and Croatia. Born in Buffalo, NY she was the daughter of Dr. Clifford
and Mildred Yeager Glaser. Betsy was a graduate of the School of Practice in 1950 and the Buffalo Seminary in 1954 with a group of girl friends that to this day are still close, the Connecticut College for Women in 1956, the University of Buffalo in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration followed by the University of Buffalo Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1961. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1961. After graduation she became one of fifty five woman attorneys actively practicing in Erie County with the law firm of Moot, Sprague, Marcy, Landy and Fernbach where she was the only woman amongst twenty two attorneys. Betsy married Dr. John R. Hurley, DDS in 1963 and opened her own practice in Lockport in 1965.

In 1974 Betsy started her distinguished career as the first woman to be appointed with the Niagara County District Attorney's office. Her duties included establishing and becoming Head of the Niagara County Welfare Fraud Bureau, Second Assistant in 1981 and in 1990 appointed First Assistant Chief of sex crimes and the Child Abuse Unit. In 1993 She joined the Law Firm of Earl, DeLange, May, Jones & Ottaviano. In 1993 Betsy became Lockport's first Woman Judge where she served until 2000, and established the original Domestic Violence and Drug Court.

Betsy's long list of organizations and community involvement include Past President Lockport City Bar Association, Niagara County Bar Association, Erie County Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Association of Women Attorneys, Past President Kappa Beta Pi, Executive Committee and legislation chairman of the PTA, Lockport College Women's Club, Kenan Center Board of Governors, served on the Selective Service Board and Lockport Board of Assessment. Also former President of Lockport Public Library Board of Trustees, Lockport YMCA Board of Directors and the Niagara Council on the Arts. She also was a former member of Zonta Club of Lockport and Business and Professional Women. Member of the Lockport Town and Country Club, Country Club of Buffalo and the John's Island Club of Vero Beach, FL.

Betsy was the recipient of the Salvation Army "Others Award" for service to the Community, Zonta Club of Lockport Award for significant contribution to the Niagara County Child Sexual Abuse Strike Force, Lockport Woman of the Year in 1974 and the International Women's Decade Honoree.

Besides her husband she is survived by her three children, Clifford Hurley, MD of Pittsford, NY, Daniel (Barbara McQuade) of Ann Arbor, MI, and Barbara (Michael) Holohan of Gaithersburg, MD; also was the grandmother of John , Robert, Richard and Katherine Hurley.

Friends may call Friday afternoon from 4 to 7 PM at Prudden and Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday June 28, 2008 at 10 AM in All Saints Church, 74 Church St. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. The family has requested in lieu of flowers memorials to the Lockport Public Library in Betsy's memory would be appreciated. www.pruddenandkandt.com
