Obituary of John Koplas
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John S. Koplas of Lockport, NY passed away peacefully on Monday May 26th in Charlotte, NC at the age of 78. A Korean War Veteran, beloved and admired local educator and proud member of the NYS Teachers' Association, John touched many lives throughout over half a century as an educator in Western New York, primarily in the Lockport City School District. John was a founding member of the Lockport Schools Federal Credit Union and remained active on the organization's Board of Directors. Even in retirement, John coordinated leisure travel with ongoing opportunities to instruct, either through local library reading groups, historical character portrayals at the Niagara County Historical Society, or as adjunct professor at his alma mater, Niagara University.

Born March 23, 1930 to Samuel Eli and Elizabeth (O'Bagy) Koplas, John outlived siblings Eli, Richard, Mary, Anne, and Eleanore (Paul Beyer). He is survived by his beloved wife Dianne (Cooper), children John R. (Christine) Koplas of Connecticut, David W. (Ann) Koplas of Pendleton, Patricia A. (Gary) Matushak of North Carolina, and Geoffrey D. (Jennifer) Koplas of Lockport, and 10 beloved grandchildren (Libby, Adam, Victoria, Sam, Alexandra, Gabriella, Ethan, Joshua, Grace Riley, and Elliot), as well as countless admiring former students who can rightly be described as part of John's extended family.
