To Mele's family...Merle was one special guy. Before I left for Florida, I had the pleasure of having coffee with Merle 2 or 3 times a week. He had called me just days before offering condolences for the passing of my sister (They had been good friends going back to the 1960s.) He had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. He will be missed.

To the Hedden family... I have worked with Jason for a number of years at FEMA in Washington. While I didn't know Mr. Merle Hedden, if Jason is any reflection of his father, I am sure he was an industrious and hardworking family man. My deepest sympathies go out to the Hedden family during this time of loss.

I had so much fun with Merle in High School & for about 4-5 years thereafter. Merle was a groomsman in my wedding to Carol, 51 years ago. I have all good memories of him. Great friend.

he always brings a smile to all. The times riding around back in the '60's in what had been his grandfather's big brown Buick with Steve and Bruce and as many as we could cram in. You are missed my friend.

This message is for Merle's sister, Patty Hedden Swader: My maiden name was Komarowski, and you and I were in 1st grade together in the one-room schoolhouse at Ridgewood. I can see your face so clearly in my mind. Two days ago I was up in the town of somerset doing research on the one-room schoolhouses and happened to see Merle's name in the Lockport paper. I thought that the coincidence was too great not to write and say I am sorry about your brother. Once your father came on horseback to visit my father, and I was allowed to sit up on the horse, which was a special treat for me. I have two photos of our class, which I would share with you if you don't have any. Again, I am sorry that you have lost Merle.
