Gordon John Bloom Obituary
Gordon John "Sonny/Gordie" Bloom, 86, of Lockport, New York, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026 in Clarence, New York.
Born May 16, 1940, in Lockport to John Henry and Edna (Gottschalk) Bloom, Gordon was a lifelong resident of Lockport, the community that he loved. During his earliest years, he lived aboard barges traveling the Erie Canal with his parents and sister, an experience that became a cherished part of his family history.
Gordon attended Lockport Senior High School, where he became an accomplished swimmer and diver. He continued his education at Bryant & Stratton College and SUNY Brockport. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1958-1962, as a Yeoman Third Class. Among his most treasured memories from his military service was his time in Africa, catching a huge snake and assisting with the delivery of medical supplies for Dr. Albert Schweitzer's humanitarian work.
Following his military service, Gordon built a distinguished career with Harrison Radiator, where he worked as a Floor Inspector and instructor of Quality Control before retiring in 1997, after 35 years. He was a dedicated union member and proudly served as Sergeant-at-Arms for UAW Local 686.
An avid outdoorsman, Gordon found great joy in hunting, fishing, pistol shooting, golfing, and playing cards with family and friends. He was an attendee of the former Grace Episcopal Church in Lockport as well as a member of the Navy Marine and Clinton Clubs.
Gordon had a remarkable gift for connecting with people. It often seemed that no matter where he went, he knew someone. He always had a story to tell, a memory to share, or a conversation to start. His warmth, sense of humor, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon (Hill) Bloom; his daughter, Alicia M. (Doug) Trunzo; his stepchildren, Diane McNamara, Dennis (Linda) McNamara, and Ronda (Mike) McFall; his treasured grandchildren, Aaron Harris, Jade (Matt Dubois) Harris, Austin McFall, Jared McFall, and Zachary McFall; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Aurora and Rainn Dubois. He is also survived by his sister, June (Charles) Covell; sisters-in-law, Karen DeFelice and Carmen Hill, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his infant brother, James Norman Bloom; in-laws Lawrence (Carol) Hill, William (Joanne) Hill, Robert (Sandra) Hill, Gerald Hill, and Michael DeFelice.
Gordon's legacy lives on in the many stories he shared, the friendships he built, and the love he gave to his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
His family would like to thank the staff at Brothers of Mercy Skilled Nursing Home for the kindness and wonderful care that they gave him during his last months.
