Douglas W. McIntyre Obituary

Douglas W. McIntyre, entered into eternal rest on May 10, 2026.  A lifelong Lockport resident, he was born April 19, 1951, the sixth child of Oscar and Dorothy (Clugston) McIntyre.  He was predeceased by his brothers William, Robert, and John and is survived by sister Barbara Sheehan and brother James.

Doug graduated from LSHS in 1969 and after a hitch in the US Navy, returned to Lockport.  He earned degrees from Niagara Community College, Buffalo State, and Niagara University.

He began teaching in the Business Education Department at Lockport High in September 1978 and retired in 2012.  He often commented that his 34-year teaching career went by in the blink of an eye, and that he never worked a single day; he just went to school and had fun with the kids.  Mr. Mac, as he was known by his students, was involved in many school activities over the years including Yearbook and Photography Club Advisor.  He took great pride in starting the school store and greatly enjoyed working with coaches and student-athletes as the Faculty Manager for many years.

Doug was an ardent lover of railroads and their histories, and his collection of railroad artifacts filled his house, which he referred to as his “homeseum”.  In 1990, he wrote and self-published “The Official Guide to Railroad Dining Car China” which sold 1000s of copies and is still regarded as the essential reference work by collectors. In addition to his dining car china and silver collection, he also avidly collected railroad lanterns and badges.

It only follows that another of his passions was riding long-distance passenger trains.  While he traveled while teaching, it was after his retirement that he accumulated over 200,000 miles and 200 nights in sleeping cars on Amtrak trains.  He often noted that enjoying dinner in the dining car, then heading off to the lounge car for a beverage and conversation with fellow passengers before drifting off to sleep in the comfort of a roomette, as the sound of the horn serenaded him to sleep was as close as he could get to Heaven on Earth.

He often observed that he was a traveler and not a tourist, and that he had been more places and seen fewer things than anyone he knew.  To Doug it was much more about the journey than the destination and the city at the end of the line was merely a place to transfer to the next train.  He has now departed on his final journey to be with those who traveled before him and are awaiting his arrival.

To honor Doug’s commitment to the school district the family has set up a scholarship, The Douglas McIntyre Memorial Scholarship c/o Lockport Schools & Community FCU, 360 South Transit St., Lockport, NY 14094, for students pursuing a career in business.  Visit pruddenandkandt.com to leave an online condolence to the family.
