James Charles Conley, Jr passed on March 27, 2026 in Kenmore Mercy Hospital, after a brief illness.  Born August 5, 1944 in Lockport, he was the son of the late James C. Conley Sr and Josephine (Gervaise Conley) Mattucci.  He was a graduate of Lockport Senior High School (1962), earned his B.A. in Health, Physical Education & Recreation from the University of Buffalo (1968), and two Masters’ degrees from Canisus College (1988). Jim was a devoted educator, coach, and athletic director, whose impact on the Newfane School District and Section VI Athletic League spanned nearly four decades.  He spent his career in public education at Newfane School District (1969-2007), after one year at Wilson School District (1968). Jim taught Health & Physical Education, served as the Newfane Athletic Director (1984-2007), and coached varsity baseball (1982-2007) and varsity football (1976-1985).  Following retirement in 2007, Jim continued to share his expertise through Niagara-Orleans BOCES, Lockport High School Baseball, Executive Secretary and Assigning Agent for the Niagara-Orleans League, and chair of Section VI. Jim will be remembered for his dedication to education, love of athletics, and the lasting influence on countless students, colleagues, and coaches.

Jim was a member of the Newfane Teachers Association, New York State Union of Teachers, Retired Teachers' Association, and Athletic Administrators Association. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially the NY Yankees, Buffalo Sabres and Bills. Jim was an avid cribbage player and developed a passion for woodworking.

His greatest accomplishment, he often stated, was his family, with whom he treasured spending time. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maureen (McGeown) Conley; children Paula (Clifton) Ganyard, Krista Conley, Jamie Rae Conley, and Brian Conley; sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, step siblings, nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his brother Douglas Conley.

Relatives and friends are invited to visitation Monday, March 30th from 4-7 PM at Prudden and Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 31st at 10 AM at St. John the Baptist RC Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.  Entombment will be in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that check donations be made to Newfane High School Athletic Department.
