Roger Frederic Townsend Obituary
Roger Frederic Townsend, 82 of North Collins, NY, formerly of Lockport, NY and Tavares, FL, has passed away on March 7, 2026. Roger was born on October 31, 1943, in Lockport, NY, the son of Clarence and Mary Loraine (Kraatz) Townsend. Roger graduated from Lockport Senior High School in 1961, and prior to that attended DeSales Catholic High School. He married the love of his life, Shirley Pencille Townsend on August 31,1963 at St. John’s Parish in Lockport, NY and they were married for over 61 years. Roger retired from General Motors-Harrison’s Radiator Plant in Lockport, NY. He was the past president of the G9 Club which was a group associated with the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors in Lockport, New York. After Roger and Shirley retired, they moved to Surfside Beach, SC in 1998, before moving to Tavares, FL in 2004. They were snowbirds for many years, returning in the summers to camp at the Wildwood KOA in Medina, NY. Roger especially loved the New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills. He played many sports while in school and as an adult, including football, baseball, bowling, and broomball. He was a coach for many years with Lockport Little League Baseball. He also enjoyed hunting with his father, brothers, son and grandsons. Roger and Shirely enjoyed traveling all over the United States and cruising with many of their close friends and family. Roger had a great sense of humor, and he could joke around with anyone he met. He has passed this trait onto his children and grandchildren.
Roger’s wife Shirley Pencille Townsend passed away March 21, 2025. Remaining to cherish Roger’s memory are children, Karen Claud-Janiga (Charles Janiga), Roger Eric Townsend (Stacy Peck), and Leann Dannemiller (J. Shae Dannemiller);as well as grandchildren, Mitchell Claud, Patrick Claud, Alexandria Dunham (Caleb), Nicole Sadda (Aram), Roger L. Townsend, Adam Barnes (Madison), and Jake Barnes; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Allison Dunham, and Nolita and Axel Sadda. Roger was pre-deceased by his parents, Clarence and Mary Loraine (Kraatz) Townsend, his in-laws Orville and Rita (Burns) Pencille, and brothers Ronald, Richard, Donald, and Douglas. He is survived by siblings Bruce (Patti) Townsend, Chip Townsend (Ron Silvario), Mary Bessinger (Gordon - deceased), Dorothy Ramming (John), Ruth Ann (David -deceased) Laport, and Jane Dent (Richard), He is survived by in-laws, Shirley Townsend (Richard- deceased) Marty Townsend (Douglas - deceased), and his brother- in-law Richard Pencille (Annette), as well as aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by lifelong friends Ann and Tom Fiegl, and Donna Beshaw.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Sunday, March 15, from 1pm-4pm. A celebration of life luncheon will follow at a later date and time to be determined by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roger’s memory to Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo (HospiceBuffalo.com).
