Obituary of James David Dempsey
James David Dempsey, age 80, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, under the compassionate care of Niagara Hospice. Born on February 6, 1945, in Lockport, he was the beloved son of the late Walden J. and Edna (Emmons) Dempsey.
A proud graduate of Lockport Senior High School, Class of 1963, James furthered his education at Bryant & Stratton College. He honorably served in the United States Army and later in the National Guard, demonstrating his commitment to his country.
For over 25 years, James worked as a salesman for Sears Roebuck. He was also the proud owner of Dempsey’s Restaurant on West Avenue in Lockport for four years. James shared his culinary talents at Gordy’s Restaurant on Quaker Road, cooked for Local 686 UAW Hall for several years, and was a dedicated member of the Davison Road Inn team until his retirement in 2024.
James was an active member of both the Clinton Club and the American Legion B. Leo Dolan Post 410. He had a passion for cooking, enjoyed golfing trips, and cherished dinners with friends. Always one to savor life’s moments, he loved outings at the lake, playing cards, and above all, spending time with his family. A lifelong supporter of the New England Patriots and the New York Yankees, he also showcased his athleticism in his younger years as a semi-pro baseball pitcher.
James is survived by his devoted wife, Darlene (Smith) Dempsey, with whom he shared 24 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his children, Jennifer and Jason; step-son Adam Seekins; cherished step-grandchild Vera “Baby V” Seekins; half-sisters Darcy Buchanan, and the late Almeda (the late Connie) Salmeri and Gail Sears; and several nieces and nephews.
