Kenny was the first race driver I ever really talked to and got to know. That occurred when he was driving Jerry Cook’s car at Monroe County Fairgrounds in 1958. I was 12 years old, lived 2 cow pastures away from the track and Friday was the only day of the week that mattered as my friends and I would be the first ones at the races and the last to leave. We met Ken in the pits after the races and he always spent a lot of time talking to us, which made us feel welcomed and important. When he won the 200 lapper at the County in 1961 I remember him telling us afterwards that he almost didn’t finish the race. He had forgotten to take his wallet out of his pocket and his leg fell asleep later in the race. I used to ride my bike to B&M Speed Shop in Henrietta and they built engines for Jerry Cook and so many of the owners & drivers of that time as well as later years. I believe the first white #28 that Ken drove was purchased from Milt Johnson, part owner of B&M and father of later day stars Alan and Danny. I remember seeing him race that car at Canandaigua on Sunday afternoons. I was at Syracuse when his car burned to the ground. I remember the Ford years and also remember him in a beautiful coach that I believe was owned (or perhaps sponsored by) Bill Colton Sr. I hadn’t seen Ken in many years but never forgot him. I still attend the races and have been involved with a number of teams over the years. I cherish the days of my youth and my early racing experiences. Thank you Ken for helping me to transition from a race fan to a race fanatic. May God bless you and may his family be at peace knowing what an impression he made on others.

This is one of my favorite pictures of my uncle Kenny. I can’t find the date of this program from Lancaster Speedway, but I (and all of my friends) spent many summer nights watching and cheering him and his fellow racers! Those were some of the greatest summers of my life!
Love and RIP uncle Kenny,
Darleen

I had the great opportunity to hear Ken tell some stories as we viewed some of his collections. He shared his love of cars and his passion for stock car racing. Our meeting was brief but left a lasting memory! RIP my friend. Bill Peffer
